ResMed AirSense 10 "Smart Start" Doesn't Shut Down

Post by Reuven Gruber » Tue Aug 18, 2015 1:27 pm

With smart start enabled the machine starts automatically but when I remove my mask (full face mask) the machine should automatically shut down but it keeps running. Any Ideas?

Define running. It's it blowing lots of air or is it doing its cool down where it blows at a very low amount while the humidifier cools down. If the latter, it is supposed to do that. Even if you turn it off at the switch it will fyi the same.

If it continues to blow at a high rate something is not right.

I've seen that happen when the mask and tubing settings aren't correct.

From the manual:

SmartStart is enabled, but the device does not automatically stop when the patient removes their mask
Incompatible mask being used. Only use equipment recommended by ResMed.

Contact ResMed or see http://www.resmed.com for more information.
If the patient is using a nasal pillows mask with set pressure less than 7 cm H2O, SmartStart will not work and should be
disabled.

Edit: I guess we covered that, didn't we Den?

I'm betting on this: If you are using the humidifier the blower will run for approx. 20 minutes (at a reduced rate) after quitting therapy to prevent condensation in the hose.

Krelvin - - It blows hard. I let it go for 1 minute and 10 seconds and it was still blowing so I turned it off manually

Palerider - Settings for the mask and tubing are correct

What pressure do you normally use?
Next time it happens look on the LCD screen to see what pressure it is blowing at.

Reuven, a while back you said you were using pillows (as it says in your profile). Are you sure the mask setting of the machine is what you are actually using?

Seriously, I would (and do) just use the on/off button.

My pressure settings are Min 4.0; Max 10.0

I used to use pillows but now I am using the full face mask - I will update my profile

I do turn it off manually but I really want to get the device working correctly as advertised

Can you do an experiment while awake?
Change your minimum pressure from 4 cm to 6 or 7 cm...breathe enough for the machine to come on for maybe a minute...then remove the mask and see if the machine will turn off.

I set min pressure to 7, ran it for 2 minutes, took the mask off and it still didn't shut down

The manual says "less than 7 cm". I suspect that it's "blowing hard" trying to keep up whatever pressure it was at when you took the mask off. Even if it was below 7 cm., it would seem to be blowing hard trying to maintain that pressure.

Is the mask setting in your machine correct?

Mine shuts off in about 5 seconds, min is never less than 10.6. Doesn't matter what type of mask, Resmed or F&P.
