I know that anyone can have apnea and that it is not caused by being overweight, but there is a correlation. I'd like to do an informal poll here to see how many here are overweight. In my case I'm about about 50 pounds overweight.

Thanks
The "correlation" is that Sleep Apnea CAUSES much of the weight gain that many people experience. (Besides those who have sleep apnea who are "normal" weight or are even skinny)
When your nightly breathing leaves you short of oxygen, it throws your metabolism out of whack.
Lots of us WERE of normal weight at various times in our lives before the long-term effects of SA manifested themselves.
Some people who have been overweight and lost weight using XPAP therapy required even HIGHER pressure levels.

YOU need to do some more reading from other sources. It's obvious that some of your present sources of information are flawed or prejudiced.

I was always told that once you treated your sleep apnea, the likelihood of losing weight was greater because it sped up your metabolism to normal. So far for me - nada. Oh well!

Don't believe everything you are told, much of it is wrong. Correct XPAP use makes life better, it won't repair all the damage or act as the Fountain of Youth. By stopping the damage sleep apnea causes, you get to live longer until you die. Jim

Even if you get down to ideal weight and still have OSA, majority of symptoms will go away. If you have 30 extra pounds to carry, it makes you more tired. I've always had a lot of muscle, but cycling is going to be my bread and butter to become as lean as possible. I have to become a semi pro cyclist to try to get rid of apnea.

You could win the Tour de France and not get rid of your apnea - it doesn't work that way and I think you know it.

Maybe he's found a way to hook the bike chain directly to his throat, surely there is a dentist willing to make up a adaptor. Jim

Whilst ignoring the poll and the issues surrounding, one interesting factoid and backed up by studies I saw is that (at least initially) successful CPAP treatment of OA tends to cause a small amount of weight gain. I haven't seen any studies that address the root of the cause but rather noted in write ups it as a minor side effect of effective treatment. Since the studies only looked at a short period beyond the start of treatment (under a year) not sure whether this continues.

Use of a XPAP machine, causes cravings for Toffee ice cream bars, Butter Pecan ice cream and of course Chocolate. Jim

Only a small fraction of people with OSA are thin. Some are, but most can get rid of OSA if they were in exceptionally good shape.

"Only a small fraction of people with OSA are thin".

Absolutely untrue!!

Unless you have lots of credible research to point to, don't make statements that only make you look foolish. If you're repeating stuff your apparently incompetent doctor told you, stop doing it because it makes you look even more incompetent.

The only people incompetent is the lab that can't gather up my tests.

Fuck everyone!

it's cool that you're showing your true colors

btw, six and a half year old studies are hardly 'state of the art' in the whole SA world.
