However, a more advanced machine was decided on, so now I am paying out of pocket.
Some other ideas,
1. Sometimes if there is a medically justified need for a different machine, DMEs will let you do a return and swap.
2. Same for insurance companies, medical justification to change and they should pay for the second machine - depends on your policy.
3. How long have you been using the first CPAP? Insurance companies usually pay for them for a set number of months on a rental basis, and if still under rental, it is easier to upgrade and have the insurance company pay.

Do you have or can you get a copy of the prescription for your first machine? This could be used to buy a VPAP if you are self-paying.
But I would really like to see you pursue the insurance company to pay based on medical necessity to switch. Your sleep doc's office should help file the appropriate documentation.

While you are comparing prices, please include cpap.com, the sponsors of this forum.

I would be appreciative of any help, trying to get as soon as possible.
So, did you call them? They would know if what they need or not. CPAP.com would also. I'm sure both will if the RX is written for the correct machine type.

if you want a s9 vpap adapt, then you should get a model 36037.
go here:
http://www.secondwindcpap.com/Used_CPAP.html and search on the page for 36037, they have a couple gently used models for 1249$, including humidifier and climateline (heated) hose.
that's a quite good price for the machine, and much less than you'd pay for it new.
Sometimes a couple members here'bouts run into one of those, and the price might be less, but you can get it from secondwind now. and they'll take a rx from anywhere people here have used them, and I've never heard any complaints.

the adapt he has here is the 36007 model, it is ALMOST the same as the 36037 I recommended above, except it doesn't have an auto mode, you set the epap, and it handles the rest, so you might need to adjust it a bit more to get it to your best settings than you would with the auto, but it can save you a fair chunk of change.

our forum hosts accept prescriptions from Australia, so I'd be really suprised if they didn't accept out of state ones

funny that they would accept prescriptions from Australia since they don't write prescriptions for xPAP machines. Did you ask your dr to give you one so you could order from the US?

huh?
My doctor who lives in Australia (as I do) wrote a prescription for me. I downloaded cpap.com blank prescription form and got the doctor to fill it out. No issues at all

Cpap machines and apap machines are all considered cpap machines in the United States,
so your CPAP Rx should still be able to get you an apap from them; just ask.
