If the government gets WIND, of this BREAKING find, they will have the CDC'S release their stores of the H23N14 Granny Apple Flu VIRUS, causing a shortage, driving up prices. Another food source off the table, except to the RICH and the NON-WORKING! Jim

Heck, those apples might later be found to cause you to feel a lack of blood flow to your brain when waking ! Sayyyyy.......whatever happened to that compromised blood flow guy anyway ?

I'm with Dr. Oz. I'll wait for the stock price of grannies to drop, then buy all I can afford. I would expect Granny to promote Granny. They are good, though!

When I first read about fecal transplantation I thought it was probably happening "somewhere else" and didn't realize it's being practiced in my area. A friend recently said that her mother had a couple bouts of c. diff back to back and was in very serious condition. She had a fecal transplant and her recovery was nearly miraculous and her health was restored. Her nurse daughter was quite impressed with the transplant results. Wish this had been around when my mother had c. diff - that's some mean stuff.

For folks on the board board who are interested in the exploding area of research on the microbiome, may I suggest Dr. David Perlmutter's newest book "Brain Maker" It is a great start for understanding the revolution that is happening in medicine around this topic.

When reading studies on the effects of diet one has to keep in mind
THIS
Other than those fibs, the study was 100 percent authentic. My colleagues and I recruited actual human subjects in Germany. We ran an actual clinical trial, with subjects randomly assigned to different diet regimes. And the statistically significant benefits of chocolate that we reported are based on the actual data. It was, in fact, a fairly typical study for the field of diet research. Which is to say: It was terrible science. The results are meaningless, and the health claims that the media blasted out to millions of people around the world are utterly unfounded.
.
.
I know what you’re thinking. The study did show accelerated weight loss in the chocolate group—shouldn’t we trust it? Isn’t that how science works?
Here’s a dirty little science secret: If you measure a large number of things about a small number of people, you are almost guaranteed to get a “statistically significant” result. Our study included 18 different measurements—weight, cholesterol, sodium, blood protein levels, sleep quality, well-being, etc.—from 15 people. (One subject was dropped.) That study design is a recipe for false positives.

Too bad the testing was LIMITED to measuring one nutrient.
Ideally, a better test would have factored in multiple nutrients,
(with actual NUMBER values), versatility, and palatability.
Let's face it; it it is mushy and cloyingly sweet with a bitter skin (red delicious),
or puckeringly sour, (granny), a lot of people (kids and more) will automatically
reach for a more appealing apple, or a junk food snack.
If it doesn't get bitten, it doesn't even count!

Reading Brain Maker myself right now. Fascinating! I'm pretty into fermented foods but need to work on adding in more prebiotics.

No, it's best to target these studies. There are already lots of good studies done on other nutrients in apples. Google will help you find them.
The problem is not with the narrow testing. The problem is when a properly narrow study is taken to mean something much bigger.

Just to be clear, the study in the OP did not say Granny Smith apples help with weight loss. It only said it helps change gut bacteria in obese mice to more like gut bacteria in non-obese mice and this likely helps reduce inflammation.
But now, if you are eliminating a bag of Cheetos and adding in an apple ....
Oh, thanks for the links. I will look at some of them later.

I posted the link to show how dietary studies can be so much crap, how easy it is to play game s with data. I know. I had a summer job doing just that many decades ago. That was what made me change from becoming a statistician to writing software.
Oh, thanks for the links. I will look at some of them later.
You are welcome. Ted talks are such fun.

"non-digestible compounds" is an interesting term. Sounds like "fiber."
We've talked about "fiber" being good for you for many years. Dietary "fiber" is pretty much anything you eat that your body can't digest. Most people only use the term when referring to material from plants as well. It isn't necessarily "stringy" material like you'd think.
I always found the term a bit funny the way people use it like fiber is some specific compound.
We are beginning to figure out that the microorganisms in our body are a lot more active than we used to think. We may get some good medicine from this at some time.
Unfortunately, the medical quacks and snake oil salesmen have gotten hold of this idea, and have been preaching it for years. This makes it difficult to do real research.
There's also the risk of the idea being misused. Tinkering with the "balance" of gut flora can make things worse, as well as better.
BTW, keep quiet about the Granny Smith apples or Monsanto will patent it.

After the mice guts get the weight reducing bacteria, how much of the guts do you have to eat, and how do you cook them. Personally eating one raw, and I could guarantee I'd lose some weight. Jim
