Those are the real heroes, IMHO. Most of the emphasis in cancer research/fund raising is directed to a "cure",
while early detection or reliable, doable prevention seems to be completely forgotten.
Comprehensive BSE is rarely taught, nay even discouraged, in favor of the big money route.
(Somebody please find me a ladder; this soapbox didn't look so high when I hopped up here.)
Enjoy your well earned status. By opening up and sharing your experience with us you are teaching and reinforcing the value of early detection and letting us know there is hope out there. Wishing you the best!
Wow, chunkyfrog, I had no idea! So glad things are going well for you! My mom was diagnosed with an aggressive, non-hormone receptor type of breast cancer, Stage 2. She went through the drugs, chemo and radiation like a pro. I seriously don't know how she did it. I was the wreck that she ended up taking care of not long after her diagnosis! Ha!
I'm so glad you haven't had to go through any of that, but something tells me you would do just fine. Having a sense of humor truly does help a lot. And you've cracked me up many times in the short time that I've been on this forum.
My mom has been cancer-free for 4 years now and she lives life to the fullest. She's definitely an inspiration. And I'm about to make an appointment for my first mammogram after hitting the big 4-0 recently. Not looking forward to it, but glad to be taking care of my health in the right way. Cheers to you, Ms. kinky chunkyfrog! (If you pierce the nipples, pictures please. LOL!)

A hero chooses their path; a person with cancer simply does what they have to do,
to put one foot in front of the other, hoping some day to hear that magic, golden word "cured".
There are amazing people in the breast cancer support group, full of courage and humor;
many with a future still unknown. I am humbled in their presence.

At five in the morning, I will check into the hospital for my reconstruction revision surgery.
Good-bye, lumpy bits that detract from my nice round tatas, hello, pointy bits that the bullfrog can find in the dark!

--and it's DONE!
I checked out a bit after noon, once the anesthetic had worn off enough so I can walk straight.
Just finished shoving some grub down our necks, and it's off to the pharmacy to spend some money.
Got to refill the pain pills before that last one dies on me.
Boobies sting, doggone it!

Congrats
And you are a hero - somebody who looks life's issues in the eye and keeps going forward regardless of the obstacles and helps others do the same.

Upside to sleeping on my back only--best leak rate in months! (Air leakage only)

Doc's instructions: I can finally peel off the dressings today, and see what surgery hath wrought.
This surgeon obviously loves his work --all smiles and cheer. --Dr. Sunshine!
