According to the searches I just did.......Yes.
Den
I seems to have been quite the topic a few years back with many of the same issues raised. I am sure many old timers are rolling their eyes. In the small amount of searching that I have done, it would seem that the conditions is quite rare. I am sure that tens of thousands of people use Vaseline around their nose (if not in their nose) on a daily basis. I am not seeing anything in those searches that says "I was diagnosed with lipid pneumonia. The only possible exposure to lipids that I have had was the daily use of a thin film of Vaseline in my nose to alleviate dryness."
The Mayo Clinic says not to use
anything that is not water based in and around your nose. That would exclude the use of Lanolin, which is a Sterol Ester.
http://www.mayoclinic.org/petroleum-jel ... q-20057784
Lipid Pneumonia is rare, here is a case outlined by NIH
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2219803/
Note that the person was ingesting significant quantities of mineral oil, suffered from GERD, and had asthma. There are a LOT of ways to get lipids into your lungs. Cooking with fats and oils could do it, look at the inside of a range hood sometime.
I am having a hard time searching for actual cases of lipid pneumonia actually attributed to nasal use of Vaseline, the searches results are flooded with warnings.
Vaseline is essentially a soft paraffin. It does degrade silicone over time. I am also having some issues finding information on the compatibility of Lanolin or other sterol esters on silicone. My hunch is that they would slowly degrade the silicone, but I have no direct references. Silicone is degraded by all sorts of things.
Anyway, I know I am rehashing old topics. The use of Vaseline is one of those things that I put into the category of "there could be some danger, but it is probably not what is going to kill me." Your mileage may vary.

Vaseline is one of the things they warn you not to use if you're using supplemental oxygen. Supposedly, spontaneous combustion can result.
Supposedly, silicone is resistant to petroleum products, but "silicone" isn't a single material. There are different raw chemical compounds and different processing methods. "Silicone" is often mixed with non-silicone compounds. Saying "silicone" is a bit like saying "plastic," it can mean a whole lot of different things.

Possible, I imagine. Stick a birthday candle down into a jar of Vaseline, light the wick, and you have a jar candle.
Of course Vaseline used to come in a glass jar--now you have to transfer the ick into something that won't burn.

Read the directions on the can. It's an aerosol, and you are never to breathe it!
You don't want to get it in your eyes, either.

I really prefer Lansinoh over any other product. I apply it to my nares when I use nasal pillows and on my lips when I wear a full face mask. It protects my skin all night long against the relentless air blast.

I use a nasal saline gel product called Ayr that I put on a Qtip and coat the inside of my nose. It also has aloe vera with a very light pleasant smell. Which goes away quickly. I would not use vaseline and like some one else mentioned K-Y is good for the moment but dries pretty quickly. I am going to look for the lanolin but so far I'm very happy with the Ary that I got from Amazon when I searched Cpap.

Lipoid pneumonia secondary to Vaseline use in a patient with tympanic membrane perforation.
Abstract
Exogenous lipoid pneumonia is a rare condition caused by aspiration of mineral, vegetable or animal oils. The aspiration of mineral oil is the most common cause of lipoid pneumonia in children. We present a 27-year-old man with a lipoid pneumonia with a history of daily use of Vaseline applied to cotton balls for ear plugging before swimming and shower.

The agent was very dodgy, and said the vaseline would also help the seal to prevent leaks.
As to the jokes and images about vaseline ' brace yourself '
