Ok, I'll give this a go..........
I picked one of these up at Bed Bath & Beyond and used my 20% off coupon so the price went from the standard $150 to about $120, a little expensive but what the heck.
I have used the unit for three nights now and I must say I am actually pretty impressed with the results. I do have a FitBit and the problem with that unit is I know that when I am motionless in bed, but not really asleep the FitBit will count that as actual sleep time because it relies on your arm movements only - - I know the FitBit is giving me way too much credit for sleep because of this and of course there is no break down as to what stage of sleep I am in at various times during the night.
The ResMed S+ uses a sensitive motion detection system that will sense your chest movements as you sleep and convert that movement into a breathing analysis -- then the breathing analysis will break down your stages of sleep from Light Sleep, to Deep Sleep, and then to REM Sleep. As far as I can tell it seems pretty accurate, I know from reading that REM usually occurs much later in the night time sleep cycle and from my S+ graphs this also appears to be the case. And it is much better at determining the above scenario where I am motionless in bed but not asleep.......it picks that up very well and gave me far less credit for actual sleep time when I compared the data to my FitBit.
I not only use APAP, but also I use an O2 Concentrator in the bedroom...........the CPAP and O2 Concentrator do not bother the S+ device as long as you have the S+ on the bedside table with nothing in front of it........I have my CPAP behind the S+ pod by about four inches so there is an un-obstructed line of sight between the S+ and my chest. The directions indicated that the S+ should be about arms length from your chest, try to keep it within about 3.9 feet from your body, and the S+ "Pod" has to be slightly higher than your mattress, I have mine about three inches above mattress -- had to use a small box to place it on to get it high enough as my bedside table is a little low.
As I mentioned the primary measurement is a sensitive motion detector that is sensitive enough to measure your breathing rate, the unit also measures room temp and noise level. As far as I can tell the only measurement that it uses your cell phone or tablet for is the noise measurement. You have to have the S+ connected to your cell phone or tablet via Bluetooth, they currently support Apple and Android. I have been using my Apple Mini iPad and the Bluetooth connection is very straight forward. The small power brick that comes with the device has two USB ports so you can power the S+ device and your cell phone or tablet at the same time. The connection to your phone/tablet is required to put the S+ into the sleep monitor mode, I have been just leaving the iPad on and connected to charger all night, but I did read that the S+ can hold 14 hours of sleep data in case the bluetooth connection is lost somehow, so in that case once you reconnect via bluetooth the saved data from the S+ will transfer to your connected device. The data gets transmitted from your phone/tablet via WiFi or 4g or 3g to the "Cloud" so you can view from any connected device later like computer, tablet, or phone. The data on the internet via computer is a little bit more robust, but there is still plenty of useful data on a tablet/phone including how your sleep data compares to others of your age and gender.....this is probably the single most useful information, the comparison is very helpful to see how you stack up.
Bottom line...........your CPAP will not interfere with the S+ data as long as you have nothing between you and the S+..........your CPAP mask and hose will not cause a problem......I don't use a hose hangar, I simply lay the hose either next to me, or on me depending on my sleep position and it has not caused any problems with the data.
Will the S+ change my sleeping habits...................probably not
Is the S+ data useful....................useful in terms of seeing how much time you spend in various sleep stages such as REM, and useful for comparison to averages of your piers
Is the S+ data reliable...................as reliable as you will ever get short of an actual brain wave monitor such as a sleep study............ResMed has plenty of lab results comparing the S+ data to brain wave data to prove this is pretty reliable data............from what I can tell from my own data it appears to be accurate and compares favorably to the data from my last sleep study......things like sleep onset time was almost exactly what my sleep study concluded and time in REM was also comparable.
Is the S+ worth the coin?.............just depends on your own personal financial situation, it is an interesting device with it's own set of pros and cons, but bottom line is it will probably not change your sleep habits much so in my mind it's more of an interesting revelation of sleep data to compare to averages.
If you are considering purchasing one of these be sure and check their web site for compatibility with you Apple or Android devices......it only works with later versions of these devices, so check on that first.
I will follow-up on this thread and answer questions if I can..........below are a few screen shots of my second night's data for example purposes:
On the graph wake is red, light sleep is green, deep sleep is blue, and REM is orange (second screen shot with graph)
