Ems, simply for the fact that as an unregistered "Guest" we cannot elect to block his ramblings from our sight, as we can with "foes" who are registered. I don't care one whit which equipment he uses.

I am also of the mind that one should be willing to stand behind their words. I realize that a username is not the same as one's real name, but as has been stated it does develop a reputation. There are hundreds of anonymous "guests" but there is only one palerider (for which some may be eternally grateful)

Why is the user name "Guest" any different from any user name here? Why would anyone object to Guest using the user name "Guest". So far anyway, no one has objected to my user name... or Pugsy's user name... or Kaiasgram's user name... or 49ers user name... or Den's user name... or Sludge's user name.

Guest obviously doesn't need the help of the members here so why is it necessary for him/her to post machine, mask, etc.? Who cares and why! Is the name "Guest" any different from any other user name here? Just ridiculous!

And because he chooses to post as "Guest", why does what he says make it any less credible?
I don't have a dog in this fight and haven't posted in this thread up until now.

But I do have to say that if you truly don't understand why posting simply as "Guest" diminishes one's credibility, then I doubt you'd understand an explanation of the principle either. This is the only board I know of out of many that allows an unregistered "guest" to post. All other boards of which I'm aware only allow an unregistered guest to read, not post. I actually think this is a good policy.

The sad thing is that the moniker "guest" is intended for the desperate newbie who has just found us,
and is not yet ready to commit. The fact that a mean-spirited, contentious person has usurped that designation
speaks to the uncharitable nature of that very person, and sets the "lambs" up for rock-throwing. (if we're not careful)
Is there no way forumadmin can identify and block the web address of this nasty character?

In my neighborhood we have a computer wizard (difficult assembly language for several prominent Silicon Valley firms) who routinely plays music too loud and stays up way past what 'normal' people consider a decent bedtime. He's also a Burning Man fan and some of his experimental fire inventions spill over into the neighborhood (meaning rescue vehicles). His personality is incredibly abrasive, to put it mildly. There are lots of other quirks that are too numerous to mention, therefore I'll just say that even with this individual we manage to work together as a fairly stable neighborhood micro-community and face the challenges that beset our side of town (retail centers, transportation hubs etc). On the plus side, this individual always chips in for the neighborhood, arrives at meetings and puts in the required two cents worth, plus a little extra.

It seems to me that the best way to handle an individual who lacks the basic social graces is to invite them into your lives and see if they can improve. Granted this method is crap shoot but when you consider that this is America, you will soon realize that they have certain freedoms... ie. you can't dictate someone's lifestyle if they are not actually breaking the law. It also seems to me the best you can do is learn how to live together. Hopefully these 'difficult personalities' can get on the same page and learn to co-exist, tho I realize this sometimes will never happen. I guess my neighborhood has been lucky in that respect.

I certainly don't object to his, or to your name. What I object to is his lack of name. We can't tell if the several posts from anonymous from "guest" are even from the same person. I would have no objection if someone registered and posted under the name "Guest." Users' identities are hidden from all except the site moderators, but because the moderators hold their email and IP addresses they are not truly anonymous, and therefore can be held accountable to the various guidelines. By posting as an unregistered guest, someone is asserting they they will not be held accountable to any rules.

I could go on, but I see that others have jumped in with similar opinions, stated more eloquently.

p.s. though I don't object to anyone's name, I do object to sludge's avatar. It give me the creeps. Unless its actually a photograph of his pet, then its cute.

Did I forget to mention if you don't like the way things are here you can take it up with forum admin or .....

I have no control over forum policy and therefore don't try to rearrange the furniture or control who posts here or what they call themselves.

When you all can finally understand (and accept) that I am not on this earth (or this forum) to please any of you - the better we will all get along. It really is that simple.

+6! Thats one of the few changes that need to be made here. Some sites require registration to visit the site, that's wrong.

While being registration doesn't give you a more worthwhile than a hill of beans credit, you aquire that by your actions. If we have a group here that have to be listed as "Guests", we also should have a group listed as "Unwanted Guests". The only problem I can see, we might have to set a limit on the size the Unwanted group, it couldgrow too quickly, like crab grass. Jim

By limiting guest to read only, problem solved. By registering as Guest, you are bound by the rules, and could be banned, maybe even be renamed and put in the Un Guest file if there is still room. Jim

Do you mean, teach by example? In theory that's good. We don't know the age of the dog. Jim

Palerider,

Let's agree to disagree, and bury the hatchet. Is that okay with you. No........, not in each others forehead!

"Guest" could be his alter ego, we do have a few splits here. Jim

I'm not too sure about that strategy, cf. The more desperate a newbie is, it seems to me the greater is his or her need to commit.

When I first found this incredibly helpful resource I had just been Dxd with an AHI of 131; I was sleeping on average a very fractured 2-3 hours per night and stumbled around like a zombie every day until around 3-4 pm. At virtually no point during the day was my thinking clear. I don't know how much worse it gets than that, yet somehow I summoned the wherewithal to know I needed to register here and do just that.

I have no problem with an unregistered guest reading posts here, and given the wealth of great information here that may be enough. But I see having the ability to post as another matter altogether.
