Freakishly small nostrils

Post by Starpilot » Tue Dec 17, 2013 11:42 pm

So I finally had my titration last night and much as I suspected, the tech agreed that the extra small nose pillow for my mask is too big for my dainty nostrils. He gave me a nuance mask to try (it doesn't go in your nostrils, just sits below them) and I wasn't sure I liked it.

Has anyone found a nasal pillow that worked for teensy nostrils?

Thanks!

Google the Swift FX Nano. I think they have an extra small but I'm not certain. Actually, the small might work. It goes around your nose... not in it. You can tighten the head gear enough so that the cushion stays in place and is still comfortable. Good luck in finding a mask that works for you.

What nasal pillow did he have you try that was too big in extra small? That went "in the nose".
The Nuance is a nasal pillow also. It just has gel in the rim.
None actually go "in the nose" except for the little tips of the inner cone.

I have used and tried many nasal pillow masks...in the Swift LT or Swift FX or the Nuance or the Opus 360 ...I can wear the XSmall size.
The Tap Pap mask that I now use...I cannot use the Small size in it...it won't seal..it's too small for my nostrils.
That is the only nasal pillow mask that I haven't been able to use in a Small or XSmall size...so it's Small is smaller than most of the other nasal pillows masks XSmall.

Yeah, I just meant the tips of the pillow go in the nose. It's the swift fx pillow where the x small is too large.

The tap pap looks intriguing, as does the nano. I'll have to figure out the procedure for getting a new mask before the 30 days period runs out.

Now the swift fx works. The seal is good. And comfort wise it's not bad. It's just not great. It also seems easy to unseat it. For example, if I shift from my back to my side it usually shifts just slightly but enough that I have to mess with it before going back to sleep.

Try a tiny, tiny bit of Lansinoh lanolin ointment at the nostril area and a tiny bit more tension on the back strap and maybe one notch more on the top strap to see if that will help reduce the movement. And when I say tiny back strap increase in tension I mean maybe just 1/4 inch or so.
Tiny bit of Lansinoh is a bit tacky...too much melts and the mask will slide all over the place. (done that myself)

Since you already have the Swift FX headgear stuff...the Swift FX Nano cushion will fit on it...you don't have to get the entire setup to try it.
The Tap Pap may not be stocked by your DME and/or they won't special order it...mine won't.
If that is the case cpap.com has it for sale now for $99 (saw last night) and it comes with free return insurance. Even return shipping is covered.

I have been racking my brain to try to remember a nasal pillow model with tiny XSmall pillows...that are smaller than the Swift FX but I can't think of any except maybe the Tap Pap.

I will share this...the Nano is the only over the nose mask I have EVER been able to tolerate. It's a nice lightweight mask and the headgear is very minimal. Headgear being minimal to none..very important to me and that's why I use the Tap Pap but it may not be that big of a deal to you.

Glad you know that only the little cones go into the nostrils...we have had some people come here and their DME is trying to cram the rim also in the nostril...OUCH.

I like the wisp, and the petite cushion is teensy!
The headgear/frame is a bit more "there" than the Nuance or the Swift FX and FX Nano,
but wonderfully secure in the silicone--without being tight.
