FFM Rides Up

Post by john_dozer » Mon Jan 26, 2009 12:25 pm

I've struggled finding a FFM that works for me. Even after over 3 months on the Liberty I still dislike nasal pillows. But the Liberty seems to stay put.

Other FFMs tend to ride up my face and start leaking. Essentially the top of the mask seal will be roughly at or blow eye level when I fit it and go to sleep. When I wake, its ridden up to onto my brow.

A contributing factor are my Neanderthal good looks which includes relatively pronounce brow and makes for a sloping forehead. When I tighten the mask, I suspect the headgear wants to pull the headpiece up the slope.

I have other fitting problems, but I think I can overcome those with twine and ducttape. The mask migrating because the headpiece is something I haven't figured out yet. I've thought of tape, but I tend to have allergies to tape (the chemical adhesive portion and not the latex, cloth or synthetic backing).

Have you considered actually loosening up the top part just a bit and tightening the bottom?

I think there's FFM's that have a chin "cup" (for lack of a better word) . I would think that would keep in from riding up.

I second Julie's suggestion.
With my UMFF and Quattro, I have all the tension on the bottom straps and the top ones LOOSE. (so loose, in fact, the forehead support doesn't even touch MY Neanderthal forehead)

Makes me think of......

It doesn't really seem all that tight and I have trouble with the upper portion of my mask sealing already, I don't want it to be too loose. I'll give it a go, though.

I was heavily thinking about this. The Flexifits fall into this category. I actually have one but there's a whole auction/misrepresentation issue attached to it and I didn't want to touch it until that's resolved.

The "chin cup FFM" is probably the Fisher & Paykel 431. It was fairly comfortable to me, and the fit is fairly loose in order for the seal to inflate. Nice mask...I have a beard and had some leaking issues, so I'm on a Quattro at the moment (so far, so good).

I know some here don't like chinstraps, others of us do. I use a chinstrap that keeps my UMFF mask from riding up. Never have that problem now. Good luck!
