Just did a sleep study last night

Post by Jennifer » Wed Sep 29, 2004 9:57 pm

I just did a sleep study last night and the obvious has been diagnosed, that I have sleep apnea. I was given something that just gets stuck in your nose with tubes that are flexible and I guess air blows through it into my nose, but it became obvious to the sleep techs that I also breath through my mouth when I sleep so this thing didn't work too well.

They gave me a CPAP ( is this the mask that goes over your mouth and nose and makes you look like a coma patient? ) and I have a sheet of paper that says "post-study CPAP pressure: 15 cm/H20. The mask type was a "ultra mirage Full Nasal Aire" and I think they tried a medium one first before trying the small. I ripped it off my face while sleeping once but after that I left it on and got about 3 hours sleep.

I don't know anything about any of this and now I have to go out and buy a machine from a CPAP supplier here ( I live in Ottawa, Canada ). Any advice you can give about what products are the most comfortable and work well? I am female, 34 and like to sleep on my stomach or side. I guess that's out of the question now? Any information you can pass on would be greatly appreciated! I've been exhausted since May 04 and thought it was just because of the baby and being up at night, but now atleast I know there's a good reason why I fall asleep at my desk after 10 hours of "sleep" the night before. Thanks!

Greetings Jennifer,

Welcome to cpaptalk.com.

The object of our messege board is to help people, everyone here enjoys the interaction.

When we use the word cpap, we are refering to "Constant Positive Air Pressure". It is a machine that blows room air into your mask to keep your airway open. This inturn allows you to go into deep sleep and get the rest you deserve.

Using a Full Face Mask for mouth breathing is common amoung cpap users. The Resmed Ultra Mirage Full Face mask it a wonderful mask. I have used it many times while doing titration studies in the sleep lab.

It may take time for you to get used to wearing a mask all night. I have sleep apnea myself, and it took me nearly 6 weeks to warm up to using the mask all night. Soon you will get so used to using the mask, that
you will feel strange about not wearing it. Any way you look at it, the positives outweigh the negatives. Cpap treatment works.

As far as recommendations on a cpap machine, I think that you should shop in the United States, because you will get a much better price down here than in Canada.

I work for cpap.com and we ship all over the world, espcially Canada.

Here is my recommendation for a machine. The Fisher & Paykel HC-221LE. This cpap machine is quiet, lightweight, and has a heated humidifier built in.
The heated humidifier helps keep your nasal passages from drying out during the night. The HC-221LE is a good value at $430.00 including hose, bag, manual and humdifier.

Here is a link to this machine at cpap.com.

As for your question of stomach sleeping, you can still stomach sleep with your face turned to the side if you are carefull. You may have to try it to see if you can actually do it, but I have seen people sleep on thier stomach while using cpap, so all is not lost.

The best advice I can give is to not give up. Your quality of life will dramtically improve with cpap treatment.

Hang in there, and let us all know how you are doing.
