nasal aire

I saw a few different ways to wear the nasal aire II on another forum. It's about the only mask I can stand and stay compliant and since I'm getting a bit board and need some verity.......
How about sharing new ways I can wear this thing?

Not sure what you mean by different ways to wear the NasalAire. I've been using one for 2 years now and just wear it like the hospital nasal canullas......... up and over the ears and around to the front of my neck. I also have to wear a chin strap and really find no problems..... at least no major ones or ones that disturb my sleep. I seem to get only minimal leaks and only at first while i get settled in. This thing is SO much more comfortable and WAY less restrictive than my old masks!

Hi Sleepalone,

I also use the NasalAire II. I don't use the forehead strap -- just the behind the neck strap. I used to feel better with a headband to stabilize it, but quit a while back and haven't missed it -- I guess that it was part of the learning curve (like training wheels) and I don't need it anymore. I do dislike the feel of the plasticy hoses on my face and neck and found some 5/8" tubular knitted cotton bandage at the medical supply store that fits perfectly and is inexpensive. It makes it feel softer and nicer. I always cut it too short, though, so cut a little longer than you think that you need if you try this!

Good luck!
Sleep well,

Jane

I'd like to try the Nasal Aire II, but I'm not sure what size to order. I use the medium sized pillows with the Swift. How did you get sized?

nasalaire

Post by blamm » Tue Jun 07, 2005 9:52 pm

The Nasalaire is about my favorite of my many masks. I too wear it like an oxygen cannula and no head band, yuck. As far as sizing it, there is a plastic star shaped thingie with knobs on the end of different sizes that fit into your nose to tell you the correct size. It is kind of tricky to try to guess your size without using that, perhaps your DME has one for you to try. The size of the Nasalaire is not the same as the size in the Nasalaire II, I wear a medium Nasalaire and a small Nasalaire II

The small was from my sleep study. It leaked and moved around making my nose hurt and creating lots of noise. I complained to my first sleep doc (who said that I was claustrophobic -- a completely tangential response!), and the RT at the lab (who was very helpful) gave me a medium that they were getting rid of -- it was such an improvement that I got the medium plus when I got my APAP. So it has been gradual and over a period of months.

I have never used the Swift, so I can't help with the sizing. You might talk to Ted or one of the other helpful folks at CPAP.COM. They may have a conversion chart or something. They are very helpful and their prices can't be beat!

Note: the hoses are different sizes on the small and medium. The medium and medium plus are the same size hose, so that you can just replace the prongs.

Have some Ayr or Simply Saline saline gel available -- it takes some time for the inside of your nose to "toughen up".

Good luck!

headgear for nasal aire

before innomed came out with the headgear we were using the rspironics deluxe chinstrap. you can cut it in half lengthwise and put it aroud your head like a headband and use the extra elastic straps to secure the tubing in place. remember if you are using the innomed headgear you should use the top opening not the loop that hangs below the headgear.

sizer

I personally called the manufacturer, Innomedinc.com and was sent that size star. It's a plastic star with the six sizes on it. They will send you whatever you ask for over there. No problem with the customer relations over at the Innomed place. I've gotten all kinds of stuff sent. All ya have to do is call and say you need help. I saw where people were getting new nasal sections if they were sized wrong and called to see what I could get...got that star thingy. Now they have 3 sizes in a bag so thats what I'll get next time, just to try the small and see if it fits, too. I would like to switch off cause one size is smaller than the other on me. All and all, I'm happy with the mask compared to the nightmares I've tried on my face.

I may break down and go for that newer Freestyle...can't decide. Heard it's better than the Infinity, but we'll see. That's 2 months away for me. Insurance pays every 6 months for a mask.

I use the star sizer for my patients, but I noticed now they are packaging the NasalAire with several different sized prongs in a package. It's still small, medium, large, but there are also different variations in those sizes.

I have heard of one person that actually liked the Freestyle. I have tried a LOT of interfaces, including the NasalAire II. The Freestyle is the one interface that I found was a TOTAL loss and was actually PAINFUL in one night's use. Its the only interface where my primary memory of it is PAIN during the night. Maybe if you lie dead still all night on your back, it might be a good interface, if you were deaf and were lucky enough to fit one of its sizes.

But for ME, it was like trying to sleep with a Roto-rooter shimmying in my nose all night. And the noise is horrendous. They were going to retool it, but from their description, it sounded like they were not really going to address the REAL root causes of the problems with the interface.

ALL of the innomed products are VERY dependent on fitting their size EXACTLY and if you are between sizes, you are pretty much out of luck since they have virtually no compliance in the material. If you are a half size, then you must choose leaks or pressure sores.

I have sadly finally given up on Innomed products, since I appear to fall into the "in-between size" group. I am sad because they have THE BEST customer service, BY FAR, in the industry. They just seem to be a bit short of engineering horsepower, in my humble opinion.

As always, with any interface.....your mileage may vary.

If any of you Nasal-aire lovers have a size large pillow piece that you want to trade a small for I want to hear from you. I have a small that my DME gave me and of course I can't use it. I would love to try it but small won't cut it.
