For those who are new to therapy

My sleep Dr. told me that you will feel bad at the beginning of your treatment. Because you are trying to overcome several things at once. This is what she told me.

1, years of bad sleep (sleep deficit) One doesn't overcome this on the first night. IT TAKES TIME

2, Your body (most peoples bodies) need time to adapt to breathing air under pressure. It is 100% unnatural for humans to comfortably breath pressurized air. IT TAKES TIME

3, Time on your therapy. Try to wear your mask as much as possible. If at first it's only for an hour. Then that's fine.Take it off and try it again the next night. IT TAKES TIME

4, Don't be worried if your AHI isn't zero. base your treatment success on how you are feeling or how you are improving. IT TAKES TIME.

5, You are going to have good and bad nights. You will have more bad nights than good nights AT FIRST. Then they will get better. But you will still have a bad night the same as non-cpap users do.

See the common thread of her talk to me? IT TAKES TIME

A month after I started treatment, I was a zombie even though my OSA's pretty much disappeared right away. The issue was my body was still adapting to the treatment. But then I started feeling a little better. Then I had that first good night with great results on my chart (zero AHI) then the bottom fell out one night. The very next night was a good one.

So the Dr. was correct. being on cpap or apap doesn't automatically & instantly change everything. It's a process. And it can be a very frustrating process. but IT TAKES TIME she told me.

super7pilot,

You have a gem of a sleep doctor. She's telling you and her other patients to set reasonable expectations and that the biggest one is IT TAKES TIME.

It's a real shame that most sleep doctors are not like yours!
