Old Machine Still Useful?

Post by Shutterbug57 » Wed Oct 23, 2024 10:16 am

I pulled out my old CPAP machine to see exactly what it is I have. It is a Phillips, System One Respironics, BiPAP Auto, Bi-flex machine. It has been about a decade since it has been used, and there is no data on the SD card and no therapy data in the machine. The machine appears to work, and it is set at 10 cm of water. In looking at the machine, there is no filter over the air intake. I suppose that is because the air intake goes into the humidity chamber before it goes into the hose. But that does seem kind of strange.

My new doc says I should get a new machine and that insurance will pay for it. I’m not sure about insurance paying for it, but it seems like a new machine might be in order. My question is for those out there with more knowledge on these things than I have, is this older machine worth keeping as a backup or is it just basically ready to go out in the trash? For reference the unit has 532 hours on it. It seems to work just fine, but technologically it seems way behind where we are today. I appreciate your input.

ETA: Infound a manual on line and there should be a friction fit filter. I ordered one on line.

What machine are you using currently?

Philips machines have been recalled. More here:

I strongly recommend that you get a nice new Airsense 10 VAuto machine.

Thanks for the info. I registered my machine for the recall. I have to go back on Friday to select either a new machine or money. I suspect i will take the money and get a new machine elsewhere.

Why the 10 rather than the 11? I have an appointment on the 30th and will see what this new doc recommends, but will keep my options open.

I haven’t used my machine in at least a decade. I fought to find a good mask back then and could not find one that would work. I will try one of the new hybrid full face masks as i hope that will solve my issues.

There really is no reason to go with the Air 11.

You have a ton of supplies and accessories that are Air 10 only.

Since releasing the Air 11, in the few years of the 11, it has received more complaints than the 10's 10 year history.
louder
lack of accessories
leaky hose attachment flaw
heating system errors
smaller tank, that goes through water faster
no swivel on the hose
SD card seating issues"

hope that helps!

but that's enough about them.

It's not that used in my opinion, so here what I am thinking.

>If your insurance is covering a new machine then go for it, and keep the old one as a backup, you never know when or who might need it.

If it wasn’t recalled, I would agree with you. However, the reason for the recall is that an internal filter shreds and comes down the airway. I’d rather not breathe foam filter bits. Therefore, i will evaluate their offer which is $$ or a refurbished unit. Once I know the $$ amount, I can decide how to proceed.

You can always remove the foam that is the reason for the recall. It is a pretty easy thing to do for this version of machine.

If your insurance will cover a new one, it might be worth upgrading. As for keeping the old machine as a backup, that could be a good idea for now, especially since you found the manual and ordered that filter
