Had an event with zero events. Weird

Post by JOinPA » Sat Jun 03, 2023 7:21 am

So I was posting a bunch in here while I learned about sleep apnea and CPAP. I did not know much even though I'd been doing CPAP therapy for 6 years. This is a great place to learn!

Anyway, I stopped looking at OSCAR reports, and checking in for about a month, loaded up my SD card today and was scrolling through it when I spotted a night with literally zero events. I usually range between 0.2 and 1.2 but I never saw zero before, or since. Anyone else get an occasional night with zero events. I didn't even know it was possible.

Yes, it happens, if not often, and congrats, etc... but... it's come up before and along with other forum veterans, Pugsy etc. have cautioned not to 'chase' zero, because by itself it's not enough to gloat or feel great about unless it continues forever (which is highly unlikely even for undiagnosed people). There's more to Cpap than AHI/numbers, so enjoy for now, but also pay attention to other things, like how you feel ongoing and how results look longterm - 1-2 nights of zero aren't enough to e.g. quit Cpap or much else.

Nope, not interested in chasing anything, been sleeping just fine, and I know averaging 0.2-1.2 is very good. I just thought it was odd. I didn't know it was possible. It surprised the heck out of me, I thought it might be a mistake, but all the data seems to be there. It was just interesting to me. Glad to know it's happened to others, too.

I suspect I won't this often, maybe once a year or something. I'm trying to remember if that's a night I didn't drink, it might have been. Certainly the stars were all in alignment that night. :D

I don't think I'll ever quit. My original sleep study I was a mess. High 40's IIRC. CPAP has never bothered me. I use it even for napping.

Nice no hitter.

Clean up those leaks, for a no perfect game.

Leaks. The bane of my existence I always get them. I think a diff mask would help, but I love the P10. I've been kind of slow on trying a new one. I should.

If you are sleeping will with a low AHI, I wouldn't worry about the minor leaks.

I recently have had nights with zero or near-zero events. Max at 20, minimum 18.5.

I felt awful. Groggy, "yucky", inflamed, bloated, light-headed, you name it.

On a lark this morning, well after I got the day started, I laid awake for maybe a half hour on my machine with max pressure to about 20 and minimum to only 3. It is on the usual BiPAP. The yucky feeling cleared up and I'm now taking care of work tasks with no problem. I'll experiment tonight with a setting like this and see what might happen.

I am guessing it was hypercapnia.

Setting the min. to 3 is pointless as the machine's default low is 4...

Not always the case. You need to understand the specs on different brands and different models.

I think your response was to Coatimundi (it would really help if you would use the quote button or at least mention who you are responding to) and he/she is using an Intellipap Bilevel machine and if you look at the specs it does indeed have a minimum EPAP of 3 available.
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/devilb ... ifications

Even ResMed bilevel machines have different minimum EPAP depending on mode.
Auto adjusting mode has a minimum EPAP of 4
but the S mode has a minimum EPAP of 3.
