I need reassurance from sleep techs (those who reside on the forum)

Post by Billymadison420 » Sun May 28, 2023 2:27 pm

Doctors have told me, which is true, that we can never be 100% certain about anything. That is true.

I feel sleepy and tired all day. But if I fill out the eppsworth sleepiness scale Its less than a 10. My doctor told me its HIGHLY unlikely I have narcolepsy (I had 16 min sleep latency on the MSLT, and I am getting a repeat in two weeks). But he also said its possible I do, and that my brain is so active that my sleep latencies are longer. He said this is HIGHLY unlikely though. If I get another MSLT (I am ), and it shows the same thing, how do I explain my symptoms. I am depressed, my mom has ALS and is dying. But I don't feel depressed 24/7 so its hard for me to accept that my tiredness is soley from depression. I also slept 12 hours last night.

I feel like I could close my eyes at any point of the day. I want to be in bed 24/7. I didn't always feel this way though and it did get like this immediately after my mom was diagnosed. I have tried a variety of daytime stimulants which do help to a degree.

For the sleep techs on here, if I get another MSLT that is also around 16 min sleep latency, should I begin my search other than in the sleep world? These are good tests right?

I have no letters associated with my name, before or after, besides "Mr.," but MSLT is a fine test when administered properly and supervised by a reputable sleep doc.

That said, depression and anxiety can be powerful forces to be reckoned with, though, since they can sometimes, individually or in combination, complicate tests and mimic other conditions.

Deal with docs you can trust. Never surrender. Keeping up the fight is a form of success all on its own.

And I wish you further success, sir.
The people who confuse "entomology" and "etymology" really bug me beyond words.

Thx

I'm gonna get a repeat MSLT. If it shows the same thing then I really have to accept what I've been told and look further into my mental health. Ugh.......

Depression doesn't mean you are crazy.
Even normal people need help during extreme times.
Depression can feel different at different times. (OK one day--total crap the next day)
You deserve to feel better; so you should get help while it is still manageable.

I for sure have the depression. Especially with my mom. I just didn't know it could be so disabling. I had tasted whatI thought was depression, before. But this is it's own beast.

Would be it be fair to say that if two MSLT's come up more-or-less the same, that I need to drop the Narcolepsy, IH thought?

I have a friend with Narcolepsy and he describes being sleepy, not exhausted. I have also been on Xywav, Adderall, Concerta, and more and none really helped that much. So it would seem that that lends towards the depression.

Do you attend/belong to any groups, whether for ALS supporters or personal therapy for depression, etc? Might want to look into those.

How long has your mother been diagnosed?

Hi!

1. Yes to seeing a therapist.
2. No to ALS groups

Mother was diagnosed about 1 year ago. My hypersomnia and EDS started almost immediately around that time. I had had it to some degree before that, but not something debilitating.
