Q# 2: Professional follow up about CPAP therapy

Post by G00k » Fri May 05, 2023 11:48 am

Hi, again, Folks,

Having used CPAP for about 20 years, I started using this forum intermittently to ask about small things, like mask comfort, leaks, rain out, full face vs nose, etc. Recently I've been watching Youtube videos about cpap in all its forms. I started seeing articles about sleep charts built from the SD chip, which, Low and Behold, I too have stuck in my machine. And regular consultations with the medical professionals that it seems everyone else is having.

After the first sleep study I had, and the follow up to prescribe my machine, I have never been contacted about followup. Same for the second machine. I'm wondering if I have been neglected. Is that something more cpap patients have experienced.

What do you think?

Thanks,
G00k

I haven't seen a sleep doctor in years and don't plan on seeing one. I self-manage my therapy with OSCAR as my primary tool. You will find many of the regulars here do the same. This forum also helps me.

My PCP updates my prescription and compliance notice for insurance purposes each year.

My PCP will not; he pushes everything off onto specialists.
I see my pneumo every year. (Medicare likes it that way)
It also gave me an "in" to get our COVID19 vaccines based on health,
rather than the whims of local government.

Did you have an initial CPAP titration study? If you did, were they able to find your therapeutic pressures?

callen, I had two series of sleep studies. The first was weird because I had a mustache and when fitted for a nasal mask, they could never get a good seal, tightened it until I was in agony and couldn't sleep properly, then told me I was borderline apnic: go lose weight, no cpap. The second time I shaved, got diagnosed with OSA, got prescribed @13 cm, and got the machine.

I never had follow up even suggested to me. I don't even remember if the first machine had an sd card. The second did, but still no follow up was suggested or requested to me. I don't know if there was even proper training of the "doctors" or "techs" concerning the telemetry. I'm sure there may have been advancements in the treatment since 2006. At present, I have an appointment with my PGP for a check up, and intend to ask about it. I may be a victim of medical negligence.

It may also be moot, because I'm anticipating inquiry into the Inspire sleep apnea solution (google "Inspire sleep apnea"). No more cpap machines, hoses, masks, etc.

Thanks to all for their input.

Gook
