Replace a Dead ResMed CPAP machine

Post by Happy2Sleep » Mon Mar 27, 2023 2:48 pm

CPAP being used - ResMed AirSense 10
Geographic Location - San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA

The ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet machine died recently. It gave me just over 5 years of fantastic sleep. I need a new machine ASAP... but, the local "sleep doctor"/sleep center is such a rip-off, I cannot abide going back to them for a replacement machine. They charged Blue Cross almost $4000 for the first CPAP machine... the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet, the one that just died after a little over 5 years. My portion of that cost was about $850. When I look at places online that sell the RM AS10 machine, prices range from $725 to $900 or so. I just can't overpay those sleep center crooks another $3000 so the sleep doc can make another payment on the S-Class Mercedes and the Range Rover. I spoke to Blue Cross about this rip-off scenario and they essentially shrugged their shoulders, weren't interested in it, and had no suggestions for how to acquire a machine without being ripped-off for an extra $3000. If the machines really cost $4000 (or probably more since 5 years have gone by since that purchase), I can afford to pay for a new machine, even if there was no Blue Cross reimbursement. It's not the money that's driving this, it's the audacity and rip-off the jerk-squad at the sleep center perpetrate on patients that I refuse to support.

Because the sleep center "hasn't seen me" for 5 years, they now want me to see the sleep doc again, have the overnight hooked-up-to-30-wires sleep-study (that they charged another $3600 for 5 years ago). And THEN I can get a new machine that I will be massively over-paying for again. I see places online that will do a doc consult via Zoom or Team Viewer or something, discuss your needs, and provide a prescription. However, when I inquire about whether the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet is in stock or not, they admit it is NOT in stock even though they are happy to take your order and charge your credit card. I've contacted 2 online sellers offering this service, 3 times each over about 8 months, and neither of them had the RM AS10 in stock when those inquiries were made. I don't want to get trapped into one of those "we shipped it yesterday" scenarios where 80 days pass, you still don't have the machine, and now the credit card company won't remove the charge because it has been so long.

How do I get a new ResMed AirSense10 AutoSet without the rip-off factor? Canada mail order? Mexico mail order? Are any of the online US-based sellers with the prescription option legitimate/trustworthy? All I ever received from the local sleep center was the machine... there is no prescription in my paperwork folder from that sleep center. The sleep center won't provide a duplicate prescription that's 5 years old. Can some sort of medical device seller (I'm clueless about how to find one of those if they exist) help with this? I know a prescription is required to purchase a machine... but replacing a dead machine shouldn't require a new sleep study, should it? I can't even look at that sleep doc knowing that he's sitting there smug in his cocoon of overcharged CPAP cash. My primary care doc and cardiologist are referring me back to the predatory sleep center that's going to put me through an unnecessary sleep study and overcharge out the wazoo for everything again. Any advice?

You can buy privately. This one is in Canada.

Or contact forum member LSAT as he dabbles in selling these machines and see if he has one or will be getting one.

^^^^ This if you want to avoid doctors and DME's. I bought a low hours AS10 from LSAT to have as a spare machine and for travel.

That sounds like the billed price, and it was unlikely that the insurance paid that. They would have paid the negotiated price.

That sounds like you paid for the whole negotiated price, and the insurance company paid nothing.

There is more than one model in that line. I'm guessing you have the AutoSet model. It's important than you get AutoSet for your next machine.

I bought a Resmed 10 Aircurve ASV for $500 with 800 hrs on Facebook marketplace. They usually do have lots of great offerings there. I recommend.

Thanks for this... a lot of the car groups in Facebook are being over-run by scammers who sell parts or cars that don't exist, then they disappear. So I'm not all that trusting of Facebook transactions, but it should be easy enough to find a legitimate seller of a CPAP machine. I'll look into this.

I haven't been to the sleep doctor in over 15 years. About 5 years ago I asked my family physician for a CPAP prescription and he didn't blink before writing the prescription for me. I scanned the prescription, saved it with my internet documents and emailed a copy to cpap.com. I have been getting all my supplies and machines from them ever sense (there are other really good on-line vendors cpap.com is just the one I use). I generally purchase a generation old CPAP when the new generation has just come out and old ones are on sale, usually paying in the $600 - $700 range.

Over the past 20+ years I have used Resmed, Respironics, DeVilbiss and I can't tell a difference. With all the Philips Respironics recall replacements available right now I would look at picking up one of those. I just plugged in my new Philips DreamStation (1) recall replacement and can't tell a difference from my AirCurve 10. I have been a pretty loyal Philips CPAP customer because they will run on a 12v car battery without having to buy a special power adapter like the Resmed machines. I always have an extra CPAP around just in case there is a problem with my main machine.

cpap.com is one of the places I called 3 times in 8 months and was told the ResMed AirSense10 AutoSet was not in stock each time... that made me nervous about ordering from them. Good to hear they are reliable. Did you experience shipping delays when ordering from them?

My antennae tingled both times when my primary care doc and cardiologist told me I had to go back to the sleep center... they didn't sound convincing. It was more like they were side-stepping the request.

Second that!

Craigslist has lots of machines too, just look local to you. Machines are cheap on the secondhand market and usually have very few hours.

I have a new machine on the way from LSAT... thanks to everybody for the recommendation. It's great to know there are ways to get machines without the sleep center. They were useful with the first sleep study and getting me on cpap. I'm grateful to find there are a handful of ways to acquire new or nearly new machines without having to deal with the sleep center directly. They will be there if something changes and I need a new sleep study. I am going to start self-monitoring with a health-monitoring wrist watch as well.

Contact cpap.com. They have recently been advertising, via email, Card to Cloud Airsense 10s for $499. If that machine, without a modem, can work for you see if they will honor the promotional price or plan to offer it at that price again in the near future. Note that you will need a valid prescription.
