BREAS Z2 very noisy at mask

Post by WWW-NJ » Sat Mar 18, 2023 6:10 pm

I normally use a Resmed Airsense 10 but I purchased a BREAS Z2 as a travel machine last year right before a vacation. It worked out terribly for me (too noisy) during that vacation and I put it aside when I returned and haven't used it until recently when my ResMed started acting up. Is there a reason that these BREAS Z2s are extremely windy and noisy at the mask? When I connect my hose and mask to the Resmed unit, it's so quiet that I sometimes have to pull the mask away from my face to confirm it's blowing. But when I connect the same hose and mask to the BREAS Z2, it is like a constant windstorm. The noise is emanating from the mask - not the Z2 itself. Also, I am using the inline muffler provided with the Z2. Does anyone know what the issue might be? Or is this just what I can expect from a travel CPAP?

Try the travelhose instead of the suppled hose. I am not sure why, but it reduces the Z2 mask noise appreciably.

Thanks for the suggestion about the travelhose. I may give that a try.

That travel hose is pretty effective. There is still some residual noise, but it's reduced a lot.
I have the travel hose, but in my case, I got used to the noise without it. I use a AirTouch F20 foam mask.
Give the travel hose a try.

I couldn't sleep with my Z2 Auto either due to the noise from the hose, mask and machine. It was a combination of several things that quieted it down enough that I can use it now. The muffler they provided helps some. Using a quiet mask helps, like the Resmed P10. The Z2 came with a 4ft hose and changing to a 6ft hose helped a little. Eventually I bought the travel hose and that made the biggest difference. I also run my pressure on the low side of what I need in order reduce the noise. I tend to use it in the cpap mode or in auto mode I turn the Zbreathe exhale pressure relief setting down to the minimum. This reduces or eliminates the whining chirping noise from the machine. I also leave the machine in my cpap bag or a something of the sort to quiet the machine noise. Obviously you don't want to completely block the airflow to the machine. With a combination of things you can get the noise level down and hopefully you'll be able to sleep.

Good advice Rob -

When I travel, I usually do one of 2 things,
1. Put the Z2 in the Nightstand drawer... with the drawer open so there is no airflow issue.
2. Put a small towel or washcloth over it. It subdues some of the motor noise.
That travel hose really does make a difference, but I have gravitated to just using a standard slimline hose with a cover on it.

What's the difference between the "travel hose" and the hose the Z2 comes with, aside from length?

When I first got my Z2, I was impressed by how quiet it was. But recently it's become too loud for me to sleep with, so I'm wondering what to do about that.

This is a collapsible hose that is has a very thin film like plastic material.
This seems very flimsy, but seems to be strong enough. I think that type of material is what reduces the noise.

It's worth a try, but FYI you will also need a Resmed type elbow to make the transition from the Z2 plastic adapter to the travel hose.
The first time I attempted to use it, I found out that the end did not play well with the Z2. I actually use this with my regular hose and the muffler.

I use my Z1 with a 6' hose with a hose cover and with the muffler. Not as quiet as my regular unit, but tolerable.
Make sure the hose adapter is fully inserted into the machine. Sometimes it will become partly detached so the small tube is not properly providing pressure to the unit's sensor. When this occurs, it gets extremely windy.
