Resmed 11 Power connector type

Post by alitesleeper » Thu Dec 29, 2022 9:12 am

My wife just got a Resmed 11 CPAP machine with that square plug. I would like to build my own DC power cord, the only issue is I don't want to spend $30 for the cable, I am sure the connector can be sourced for far less, if I know what the connector is called. Anyone know?

Pretty sure that plug is proprietary.

$30 is probably the cheapest thing you'll ever buy from Resmed.

I wouldn't go cheap on the connector/cable. The ResMed connector is likely designed to carry the ampere load of the AS11 with water heater and use of one that isn't specced the same possibly could result in heating and damage to the connector in the AS11. It is an unusual connector and looks almost similar to a DisplayPort connector used for computer video monitors, but likely less connections needed to provide power to the AS11.

As an avid DIYer, I understand your desire to make your own cheaper cable, but considering that you have to locate a weird connector, figure out how to wire it and hope you do it right so it works and doesn't damage the machine, IMHO it would be best to bite the bullet, spend the $30 and move on.

I *believe* the connector is proprietary and there are at least two similar, but slightly different ends.

Image

The one on the left is designed for the Air11, connected to a power supply rated for 65 watts. (two corners cut)

The one on the right is designed for the AirMini, connected to a power supply rated for 20 watts. (one corner cut)

It's designed this way, so that the 65 watt power source can be used in either the Air11 or AirMini. But the lower rated 20 watt power source can't be plugged into an Air11 (with humidifier and Heated Hose) as that would draw much more than the power supply can provide.

I'm the OP. I totally get that it looks proprietary, the problem is I don't believe it. I have a brother-in-law that is a die and tool guy. They are the men/women that make the molds that make the plastic pieces for things like this power plug. I have learned from him how VERY expensive to make a mold and then run the mold (aka use the mold to make the parts). Mind you that you will need multiple molds (black and yellow plastic) and then some process to put it all together. All in all, very very expensive.

When the piece is special to the design of what you are doing, for example, the Resmed 11 case and water compartment, then, yea the cost is justified, but... with something as common as a power plug... it just does not seem to make good business sense to invest the money into designing a custom plug.

My money is if we look long enough, we will find this is a stock piece ;)

Personally I err on the side of caution because I don't want to drop another $1100 on a machine that is hard to get.

But hey, that's just me.

(Though I did buy a less expensive used machine for backup from LSAT. Thanks LSAT.)

Electrical engineer here. I agree 100%. The whole arena of cables and connectors is confusing...even for professionals! There are literally millions of part numbers and without a name, finding the exact part you are looking for on different manufacturers and suppliers websites can be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Also, the fact that there are places selling knockoff versions of cables/adapters for these units on Alibaba, etc...means that there is DEFINITELY a supplier out there that sells them. ResMed sure as hell isn't supplying these to their competition!

I haven't gotten my Airsense 11 or AirMini in yet. I'm in the planning stages for upgrading my 10 and wanna make sure I can connect it to my Jackery for camping and an Anker GAN power brick. The thing that would really help here is if someone were to take a caliper and measure some dimensions of the cable. That would be a TREMENDOUS help in finding out who makes the part. If anyone is willing to do that, I can do some digging. Otherwise, I will do it myself and report back once my device comes in.

I am sure the connector can be sourced for far less.
The cable and connector are moulded together, not manually assembled.

Which means that the connections are wave soldered to the cable. The likelihood of finding a connector by itself with pins that can be manually soldered to is probably extremely low.

You can manually solder almost anything with a little ingenuity...and maybe some solder paste and a heat gun. Plus the fact that a cable with a mating jack exists (see pic) and cables seem to be made by different suppliers (see the white one), makes me pretty confident that there are part numbers to be found for these somewhere. Or...they all just come from the same factory in China and you just gotta know who to talk to. In that case, it's probably a lost cause!

The female connector posted is exactly what I am looking for. Will someone please post a URL for this photo. Even better, a URL where I can buy it.
