Ignorance about sleep apnea

Post by iainza » Tue Jan 31, 2023 2:02 am

Many years ago when doing Psychology 101 we touched on the condition of sleep apnea. Years later friends complained about sleeping near me because I snored so loudly. Even later I asked my doctor to remove a tablet because it left me woozy after getting up. Still the penny didn't drop. Then I had a light bulb moment and got tested for sleep apnea. Clinician said it was the loudest snoring she had heard from a patient. My AHI was over 25. Since then I found out how many others were on CPAP therapy.

The lesson is. If your partner or friend is snoring loudly with apnea breaks or feels tired in the morning and regains energy later in the day encourage him to get tested. In my experience, there is so much ignorance about sleep apnea.

Agreed! I guess one thing all of us can do is to be open with other people about having apnea and using CPAP therapy. Like you, I've discovered that a lot of people in my life are in the same boat as I am, but I hadn't realized that earlier. It'd also be nice if TV shows that have scenes of people going to bed would include some where the people are using CPAP.

There are some.

In the Sopranos - " ... a nurse tech offers this advice: “It will ramp up to 8 pounds per cubic inch – and it will keep your airways nice and open when you are sleeping.”

8 PSI = 560 cm H2O The nurse must have been hired to do a hit.

I don't really know much about ignorance.
The people who confuse "entomology" and "etymology" really bug me beyond words.

I make it more like 3375, because how else would you measure pounds per cubic inch, other than adding up the force on each of the six faces?

Wonderful! (I watched the Sopranos BEFORE being diagnosed, so it all went over my head.)

I remember standing in the back of a farm truck with stock racks,
filled with all our furniture--wind in my face, while my family relocated.
I can see why dogs absolutely love their heads out the car window.
Too bad it doesn't play so well with people.
