In the short term, bad sleep can cause a hormone release that can feel great and even energizing temporarily. But it is still better for long-term well-being of most with moderate-to-severe OSA if their brain and body learn to expect ALL sleep to be stabilized-airway sleep so that the nervous system learns to relax from high-alert status during sleep.

That said, some people only have real trouble during supine REM. So for them, any nap of less than 90 minutes or so can probably be safely refreshing.

Then again, are you sure that the "terrific" feeling isn't just because you feel like you got away with something naughty?

The same catnap would give me a headache.
Sometimes pain causes your brain to produce endorphins--natural heroin.
Have you ever wondered what possesses people to intentionally endure pain--
i.e. cutting, extensive tattoos?
It makes you high.

Are you lying down or in a recliner?

"Terrific" says to me you had some delta sleep, which is highly restorative.

Now, interesting thing about delta sleep. The incidence of obstructive events is greatly reduced because of a change in arousal threshold (I didn't make this up-- Magdy did). Inventing a drug to modify arousal threshold could potentially be the Magic Bullet.

Anyway, I am theorizing that you had a gaggle of event -free delta sleep.

Interesting! But delta sleep apparently doesn't kick in til around 90 mins, which doesn't fit what happens while kind of lying-ish on sofa, head mostly on arm or even higher back (sort of sitting against it). And Froggy - thx, but I never, ever get headaches - never have (probably stuffed with Respironics foam or something tho' I don't use their machines).

Not exactly a medical source, but seemingly well-enough researched:
Also called Stage 2 naps, power naps are typically long enough to cycle through the first two stages of sleep, known as N1 and N2. N1 and N2 are considered the lighter stages of sleep, and take about twenty minutes to complete. . . . Naps longer than twenty to thirty minutes allow the body to enter slow wave sleep, or N3. -- https://sleepopolis.com/education/nap/
But I consider Rubicon the experienced biphasic expert.

And if you're exhausted or drunk that'll easily drop to about 10 minutes!

They say it's probably best not to startle him awake, in that case.

That combination also makes HST the better choice, in most instances, as I understand it.
