Need help: stinky air from CPAP after hospital stay

Post by SakimaStorm » Thu Jan 26, 2023 10:48 am

Hello,
After a brief hospital stay, the air from my bilevel CPAP stinks. I've washed the hose and my mask and changed the filter. Even ran the machine for a couple of hours trying to clear it but the odor persists. My CPAP carrying bag also smells though not as strong as the air from the CPAP.

It smells like chemical disinfectant. The way airports and doctor's offices smell after their cleanings due to the Covid pandemic. (I remember the smell being especially strong in the Seattle and Atlana airports, so bad I needed to shower and immediately wash my clothes when I got home).

Any recommendations on how to purge the smell from the CPAP? I'm disabled and have poor vision so taking the machine apart to clean it is not really an option for me. If that is what it needs, can anyone recommend a reputable company who can do that?

thank you.

Change the filter and then run it near an open window for several hours.

Try running it outside on the porch or something for 12 hours or more. Get some fresh air through it long term.

If you have a brand new mask and hose...give them a try as well.

Thank you. Great advice. Put it outside and after re-cleaning the hoses/chamber etc, put it on mask fit and let it run. Been running about 8 hours now and already smelling better.

What was interesting was that the smell was much much worse when using the humidifier and heated tube. Perhaps the heat and humidity made the existing odors more noticeable.
