Resmed 11 humidity pot runs out of water

Post by BikeisDusty » Wed Jan 25, 2023 9:50 am

I have got a new Resmed 11 few months back. This replaced an old Airsense 10. I have found the 11 humidity pot is dry by morning, even for short sleep cycles, like 5 or 6hrs. I could sleep 10hr with the old 10 and still have water left for another night's sleep.

The DME did not send the heated hose for the 11. Is this the reason water gets used more? I feel too dry on setting of 4 so typical have it on 5 or 6.

Or is the water pot too small for the 11?

The humidifier of the 11 is the same size as the 10, both 380ml. But the taller design of the the 10, allows it to be over-filled a little bit more.

A heated hose doesn't make it use more water. But having a heated hose and setting the humidity and hose temp to auto could have resulted in less water use.

On your Air10 you had the humidity set to 4 (or auto), on your 11 it's on 5 or 6. That's why it's using more water.

From my experience, bedroom humidity is a big factor in how much water you use on the machine. If I use a room humidifier in my bedroom, my machine water usage drops considerably.

My brand new Resmed 11 , when it started getting cold outside, was having the water chamber empty in the morning. I bought a cheap humidifer for my bedroom when I found out the humidity was around 20%. I turn the humidifier on at night, I wake up with the humidity in the room at around 45%, and there is water left in the Resmed 11.

While adding ambient humidity to a room appears to avoid running a CPAP tank dry, it would seem that the manufacturer should be designing the tank size to not run dry even with the lack of supplemental humidity added to a room.

So what, they should put a gallon size tank on the machine (which would require a LOT more power to heat up) just because a minority of people need more than the standard 380ml of water?

*MOST* people don't use up the whole water tank every night.

Maybe they should put a hose that runs to the bathroom faucet so there's a never ending supply of water?

Then they would come here carping that the machine doesn't fit on their nightstand or in their travel bag.

Have you increased the pressure? What is your leak level? The more leak = the more water consumed.

Just get the 5 gallon jug delivery size, set that next to the bed.

Number one factor in the amount of water that gets consumed...ambient humidity.
Other factors are humidity setting, pressures used and leak rate.

I use the max humidity setting of 8...AirCurve 10 machine...ambient humidity around 40%...leak pretty much zero..pressures average around 10/12 ish....just filled up the water chamber and I still had water to the bottom line level. Plenty left. Not enough for 2 nights but surely enough for 1 night. That was with 8 hours of use as well.

If a water chamber is totally dry after 6 to 8 hours of use....something somewhere is causing it to happen.

When people complain of running out of water in the winter time...I always say check the ambient humidity first because if we are using a furnace or a wood stove it is going to dry the air out.

I've just recently purchased an AirSense 11 to replace my aging Philips. The Philips was still fine, near as I could tell, but it was whole lot noisier than my wife's AirSense and seemed to maybe be getting noisier still. Better to replace it early, I thought.

I too notice a HUGE difference in water use. The tank of the Philips is actually a bit smaller than the Resmed, but EASILY lasts two nights. The Resmed is empty after no more than 5 hours. I'm confident of this time because the Resmed shuts off after 5 hours, leaving me gasping for air at 4:00 AM.

(This is with the auto-shutoff "feature" disabled.)

I'll restart the machine and an hour later it shuts off again. And again. And again. Only with water in the tank will it run.

Here's the thing. It's not a room humidity issue. It's pounding with rain these days .. RH is about 99. The only way it could be higher was if I was underwater. The pressure auto picked by Resmed is very close to the manual setting of the Philips, 11.1 vs 10.5. It's the same mask .. whatever leakage there is should be the same.

I think there's a problem with my machine, and perhaps others, plain and simple. What the problem is, I don't know, but my creaky old cancer causing Philips is back beside my bed. My fancy new Resmed is in the closet and headed for recycling as I search for a GOOD machine.

1. You don't mention the humidity setting of each machine.

2. You don't mention the mask leakage data with each machine.

3. You don't mention whether the new machine is under warranty.

4. Good luck with this st*&$%^y:
