Hi everyone,

Any idea how this mask should work. To me it looks like most of the air I breathe out I breathe in again.
It has some perforations on top. It has this little filter in front too.
This mask was working fine for me for over a year. I have replaced it 2 months ago and it was still very good.
However some time ago after few bad nights I figured out that I am suffocating. I was looking closely into this filtery thing.
It was black! I had an impression that when I breathe out this is the place where the air should go out. However it did not.
I have pushed this filter insert to the side so the air could escape a little bit. It changed a loot.
I have bought a new filter. When it arrived I was surprised to find that the air almost des not escape from it. However I was able to have good nights again.
Now month later I have an impression that I am still not able to breathe well because of this filter.

Can anyone explain how this mask should actually work?
Do you clean this filter, how?

The mesh is not a filter, it's a diffuser.

And it is to vent your CO2. No air comes back through that port.

When I wash my mask, I actually remove the whole piece and don't wash it. I find that washing it just spreads the dark staining. I've been using the same diffuser for well over a year now.

If you're uncomfortable with the dark stains that form aligned with the vent holes or believe it's impeding the venting, you can remove the existing mesh and then take a piece of a ResMed filter for the AirSense and cut it to fit the vent and use it. The material looks identical.

Given you have been waking up in the morning, I'm going to guess that you have neither been suffocating to death, nor dying from Hypercarbia.

The venting is so diffused it is tough to detect, That design is used on the P30i and upgraded N30i, it is used by millions of people, and being used well beyond the the typical DME replacement scheudules.

They're all waking up every morning as well.

The material in the diffuser does incidently provide some filtering, but it primary function is to diffuse the scavenged air flow and reduce exhaust noise.

The N30i masks originally come without a diffuser, just holes in the frame, and there was a LOT of exhaust noise. The P30i followed and came with the diffuser which reduces the noise to a negligable level while maintaing adequate scavening of CO2. The N301 design was later revised with the same diffuser.

The black stuff that builds up in the diffuser is just the very fine particulate matter that is in the ordinary air we breath all the time. It is harmless and does not impact the exhausting of air. IF really you need to convince yourself of this, apply some tape over the outside of the diffuser assembly to block the air flow and see what its like FOR A SHORT TIME ONLY.

You are defintely not inhaling any more CO2 than you do without a mask on.

So I have been testing this yesterday. I have removed the mesh and it was exhausting more or less the same amount of air.
So probably its more to do with my fears then actual problem

After this experiment I had a good fearless night of sleep.
