What to do with used Cpap machines?

Post by ejbpesca » Thu Dec 01, 2022 11:11 am

What would be the best thing to do with a used but working cpap machine?

1. Dispose of it.
2. Have it recycled.
3. Donate it.
4. Repurpose it.
5. Other

If you select repurpose or other, please give a suggestion of how to use this air pump other than a CPAP or give detail to Other. Any suggestions as to how to recycle and/or donate will be appreciated.

Welp, no suggestions coming in. Land fill it is I guess with no local access to recycling, donation, etc.

Could it depend on the make & model of the cpap? Which do you have there?

When you get a new one, keep the old one as a backup (if it's operational). Also, keep all the unused filters, as they might be hard to get for an older machine. Likewise for any heated hoses (standard hoses are universally compatible). Ditto for water tanks.

If it's not in working order, see if it can be donated anyhow. They might be able to fix it, or use it for parts.

If you already have a backup, try donating it. Not that you might want to keep the most recent "old" machine as your backup.

If it's not possible to donate, recycle.

Donations are often accepted by local charities.
Check the nearest homeless shelter or free clinic.
The needy are everywhere.
If it works, somebody can use it.
Recycling has been turned into a racket:
"Pay us to toss it in the ocean."

I have 3 machines. Remaster Aflex Remaster System One and Resmed Air Sense.
I don't think those are on a recall list. The oldest one Aflex was not used but a year. The other two saw full service of Medicare replacement standard but work fine.

I am thinking most are just set aside or disposed of. I have too much time to think. Ha.

Breathe California of the Bay Area

The Reggie White Sleep Disorders and Research Foundation

American Sleep Apnea Association

Advocates for World Health

Durable Medical Equipment Aid Society
I would trash any machine older than seven years.
