Tearing off headgear
Tearing off headgear
I am on my third model of pillows/headgear -- each one has progressively has more straps and coverage. I have had a Resmed 10 for the past four years. I tear off my headgear almost every night. I have discussed with my sleep doctor and no actionable suggestions.
I have no leaks, my pressure has been titrated several times. I was told that it would get better but it does not. When I remove my headgear it usually is during the first 90 minutes.
I literally yank it off my head - I don't even unclip the magnets for the straps.
I have tried a chin strap, can't use tape because I'm allergic to the adhesive. I was told this would get better but it has not.
The only thing I can say is that when I am awake, up and about - I hate wearing hats. I only wear a hat when it is bitterly cold out (that is how much I hate having things on my head).
Anyone have any insight into why I have not adjusted?

Re: Tearing off headgear
Q's - Resmed 10 what? Pressure settings now? What mask? Are you overtightening the straps thinking it will stop leaks? That can backfire and loosening them would be better.
Are you on ? meds?

I now am on meds - doesn't make a difference over the past four years I have not been on meds until the last six months. I can keep the mask on about 40% of the time with heavy medication.
I have experimented with tighter and looser - no difference
At the moment I am on the P10.
Re: Tearing off headgear
I'm curious to know which masks you used that had less straps and coverage than the P10.
Do you really not disconnect the P10' s magnets? That's an amazing feat!
Put it on again. And again. And again.
Get used to wearing a mask while you're awake, e.g. watching TV, listening to music, reading.
No.
We can only share tips that have helped us adjust.

What meds - they can have an effect (not trying to be nosy).

I do the same thing. Wake up with it near my hand or on my stomach.

What you have to do is right before bed, put the mask on in front of the mirror and then:KittyMom22 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 23, 2022 4:34 pmI do the same thing. Wake up with it near my hand or on my stomach.
take a 500ft roll of gauze and proceed to wrap your entire head and mask with it leaving the only way to breathe being through your mask. It is best to do this next to your bed so you don’t get tripped up. You should not drink any fluids for a minimum of 12 hrs before bedtime so you don’t wake in the middle of the night to pee.

Just kidding KittyMummy22.

Re: Tearing off headgear
You may have to try the Bleep mask, which has no straps or headgear.
Hopefully, you can tolerate the tape used to adhere it to your nose.
Another alternative might be the sleepweaver all cloth masks.
They are so light that they might be easier to get used to.

Keep trying different medical and surgical tapes. There isn't one universal formula for glue. You might hit on one that works for you.

Re: Tearing off headgear
Do you have Auto On/Off set to On?
If so, try turning Auto On/Off to OFF. That way when you remove your mask, the machine will keep blowing at full pressure. Maybe the noise or the airflow will wake you up enough for you to realize the mask is off. Then you can put your mask back on and see if you can sleep with it again. Rinse and repeat all night long: If the noise and/or air of the machine blowing air through your mask when it's not on your nose wakes you up, put the mask back on your face and try to get to sleep once again.

My entire family is very allergic to all medical and surgical tapes - I've had a lot of surgery. Can't even use Salonpas pads.GrumpyHere wrote: ↑Wed Nov 23, 2022 8:33 pmKeep trying different medical and surgical tapes. There isn't one universal formula for glue. I can give this a go, but my sister has told me that I tore off my mask and slept through the hissing.robysue1 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 26, 2022 12:46 amDo you have Auto On/Off set to On?

If you have hair, you could try using bobby pins to attache the headgear to your hair and make it more difficult and/or painful to just yank the mask off since the bobby pins will yank on your hair ...whatever wrote: ↑Thu Dec 08, 2022 10:27 amMy entire family is very allergic to all medical and surgical tapes - I've had a lot of surgery.
