Nightly Sleep Aid Recommendation

Post by ykf7b0 » Wed Oct 05, 2022 3:07 pm

It has been suggested that when I go back for the sleep study using a full face cpap mask that a sleep aid would help dramatically. I currently take Aleve PM but I don’t sleep the whole night. Melatonin didn’t phase me hardly at all and Unisom left me with a hangover the next morning. What do you guys use on a daily basis with good results and that is safe for daily use?

You don't really have to sleep the whole night for a sleep study. They just need about 3-4 hours to get a reading

I took Ambien when I had my last two sleep studies. I got plenty of sleep both nights.

Most just take an Ambien for the study.

Bedtime rituals are generally considered the only effective "daily" or "nightly" long-term approach. Everything else is basically an emergency short-term approach for a few nights occasionally.

Those are two very different ideas/questions: (1) What is safe and effective daily/nightly? and (2) What works for the one night of a sleep study?

For most here (not all), I believe, masking up for PAP is its own automatic bedtime ritual that helps trigger sleep when the appropriate and ideal pressure has been dialed in.

The people who confuse "entomology" and "etymology" really bug me beyond words.

I took Ambien for a few years until my Dr. strongly discouraged it. I now use 40mg of Melatonin (4 x 10mg capsules) and 1000mg of Valarian root (2 x 500mg capsules) nightly. The Melatonin puts me to sleep and the Valarian root does a good job of keeping me asleep.

My Dr. strongly discouraged the Diphenhydramine hydrochloride (Alieve PM and MANY other over the counter sleep aids) for ongoing use too. It puts me to sleep quite well but gives me a hangover the next morning.

P.S. I am about as far from acceptance of Naturopathy (witch doctors) as you can get... But the Melatonin and Valerian root do work for me.

There is no good prescription drug, OTC drug, or supplement that is good for daily use. If you are worried about sleeping during the study, ask your doctor for a script for one Ambien.

For daily use, studying and practicing good sleep hygiene is the solution.

My prescription was for two Ambian pills, one for each night.

Yikes @ 40 MG of Melatonin. I thought I was bad when I took 10 mg. I'm down to 5 mg after a couple of my physicians told me to take as little as possible so that the body doesn't stop producing it.

With a home sleep study, one can use Dr Ruth's tried and true "sleep aid".
Not quite as feasible in a lab setting--but possible if one is determined . . .
Or two . . .

Those would be some interesting results on the home test breathing charts . . .
