ARES Sleep Study Report Advice

Post by Goldfish » Tue Oct 04, 2022 5:30 am

Hi
Very new here I’ve been using a trial CPAP for 3 weeks after a sleep study, but I feel I never really had the results explained to me properly.
The reason my GP sent me for the study was that I was snoring as my throat constantly feels clogged and I’m forever coughing and clearing my throat.
Now I’m at the end of my compliance period the next step will be to get my own machine, but I feel A total lack of control over the whole process and wonder if I’m really a candidate for CPAP.
Can anyone advise?
Thanks

I’m trying to add my report but it’s not working!

Here are my results:

Overall. Supine Non-Supine REM sleep
AHI. 10. 19. 9. 6
RDI. 17. 29. 15. 9
Lowest oxygen saturation - 88.2%
Epworth - 8/24
REM sleep - 8%

Welcome to the forum. Sadly, a lack of proper communication is very common - it's the main reason that forums like this are essential.

Our particular forum won't accept attachments at present, as the storage is full and there is no way for the moderator to delete old attachments. So use an online storage site such as Imgur and the post a link.

Anytime you have a sleep study done you should ask for a copy of the report and read it carefully. Then you can ask specific questions about the things you don't understand here. I save all my sleep reports and copies of prescriptions in a file with my valuable documents. I found I had to educate my primary care Doctor on several treatment options for sleep Apnea as he only had a few patients using Cpap.

Another option is upload the data to sleephq.com and create a link to share here.

That's true, Lyn, but of course it only works for nightly data. The OP wants to upload his sleep study report.

Absolutely correct and thanks for pointing that out!

welcome to the zoo!

thanks for the stats. however, in order to get a more complete picture, we're going to need to see the actual charts.

as mentioned, use a hosting site (imgur.com is free.) then link to the image here.

good luck!

Is this night or day? Have you seen an ENT for a consultation and examination? Do you notice any symptoms of relux?

Your sleep study shows mild obstructive apnea with lots of snoring. "Mild" is relative; the night of your study, you averaged 10 apnea or hypopnea events per hour. These may not all have caused you to wake up completely, but such events disrupt sleep and sleep "architecture," meaning the normal progression of sleep stages.

The kind of test you took has its limitations, but it does suggest you should really try to make a go of CPAP. Can you tell us more about what makes you think you're not a good candidate?

It would also be good to get your answers to Chicago Granny's questions. Reflux, allergies, and structural abnormalities inside your nose are potential causes of throat irritation and postnasal drip.

I’m more congested during the day. My doctor treated me for reflux although my only symptoms are congestion and clearing my throat and coughing. I feel it rattle in my throat and back of my nose at night.
She prescribed Tecta but nothing changed. I suspect the Apnea test was just because she couldn’t think of anything else to try!
She has not referred me to a ENT specialist.

I don’t know if I’m a candidate for CPAP. I just know that my issues are not resolved by CPAP and suspect they are a separate issue.

I have to say I don’t like it. The noise is makes disturbed me although I do have white noise running. The mask doesn’t feel secure and gradually loosens its grip. Every time I turn over I have to adjust the piece against my nose as it starts blowing air in my face.

It takes me several hours to feel like I’m not wearing it after I take it off and I’m tired through such disturbed sleep. I’ve usually kicked it off by 3am as I’ve had enough.

It does stop me snoring because it’s a physical impossibility to snore while wearing it, which is nice for my husband!

My trial machine is a Resmed Airsense 10 and the mask is an Airfit N30. I’ve also tried a DreamWear silicone pillows mask.

Do you have page 1 where desaturations should be listed?

Are you taking REM suppressant medications?
Freeze this moment a little bit longer.
Make each sensation a little bit stronger.
Experience slips away.

@ Goldfish

Understand this is not an overnight quick fix with stupendous results immediately. It is a journey which times time and patience and perseverance (at least for the vast majority of users). IMO the first thing is to convince your brain that the hose and mask are not threatening enemies, but rather friends and allies that will enable you to have better sleep and will help mitigate other problems (see the wiki). Talk to yourself over and over and over again. Bottom line - if you are convinced cpap will not help, it probably won't (a self fulfilling prophecy). Set your mind up for success.

I’m not taking any meds, and no, that was all I was given after the trial.
