Changed date on Resmed S9, data gone?

Post by raoulcousins » Tue Oct 04, 2022 7:52 am

I use a Resmed S9. The Maryland Department of Transportation wants a usage report for my driver's license (this is a requirement of ALL drivers in the state with any type of license in the state who self-report sleep apnea).

I didn't buy the machine with insurance, so no one else has any records of my usage.

I inserted an SD card (I've never had one in the machine before), got the data off of the machine, and exported it to Oscar. The data looked good except that the dates said 2008. I deleted the Oscar profile with the data showing 2008, went into my machine's settings, and the machine's date and time was showing some day in 2008. I changed the date to today's date and put the SD card back in the machine. The machine display said it was erasing the card and copying data again. When it finished, I put the card back in my PC, and when I went to import it into Oscar it said there were no readings for any dates.

It seems that changing the date erased the old data. Is my old data gone?

The state department of transportation has said that without a machine report, I'll have my license suspended. I'm panicking and don't know what to do.

Try again tomorrow - possibly OSCAR couldn't handle two daily updates.
Did you make sure to lock the SD card before inserting it to OSCAR? If an S9 meets an SD that visited a computer withou being locked, it will re-format it regardless of what you did and didn't do to the date. That's because computer write something on the SD, and as far as the S9 is concerned, the SD is now corrupted.

No, I didn't lock the card. Anything that was on the card originally is gone.

Luckily the department of transportation was sympathetic to my case and has given me an extension to collect more data going forward, so I think I'm ok for now.

Do not have the card locked when it is in the CPAP.

The S9 only keeps a years worth of data, so my *guess* is that since you told it that all the data it had on the card was 14 years old, it figured it didn't need any of it anymore.

I hope I'm wrong.

If your S9 is now set on today's date, 2022, you should be good to record current data.
I am guessing the 2008 dates were your recent usage but useless, because the
S9 was set incorrectly.
I have discovered that setting dates on electronics is often quite arbitrary.
Some glucose meters will accept outdated test strips if you remove the batteries
and set the date to a date while the strips were still acceptable.
Most of those expiry dates are pure BS anyway, as a couple years "slop" is intentional.

The data was erased by the S9 because it saw a foreign change to the SD Card.

With the ResMed S9, whenever *any* change is made to the SD Card (by a device other than the S9), the S9 will erase the SD Card and start new. When you insert your SD Card into your computer, Windows (or Mac) will create a thumbnail index file on the SD Card.

When you put the SD Card in your computer make sure the SD Card is locked, and remember to unlock it when you put it back in the S9.

Thanks everyone. I guess this is resolved. Final conclusion is that the DOT decided I can keep my license even though I have no history of CPAP usage to show them, but decided I need to send them usage reports every three months for the next year or I get my driver's license revoked. Quite onerous for a regular non-commercial driver with no driving incidents who just self-reported sleep apnea!
