AirTouch F20 Memory Foam Cushion - Small - Only Lasts 3 Weeks

Post by DS256 » Mon Oct 03, 2022 8:01 am

I'm looking to understand if I'm doing something wrong with the above. I only get 3 weeks wear before a split appears at the top of the mask creating a major leak. I'm going to play around with the head setting which holds the mask to the top my nose. Wondering if anyone else has issues.

Thanks

P.S. Sorry if this has been asked but the search on this forum only accepts searcg terms of 4 or more characters. It will not accept F20 as a search term.

I only tried ONE cushion. And --pfffft! Never again!
Your experience is common.
The materials are not designed for a reasonable period of use.
Luckily, the Airfit f20 all silicone cushion fits that frame--and is washable.
Put a mask liner (Padacheek) under it, and save yourself much grief.

Thanks chunkyfrog. So, something like this? Have you tried one? Not sure how comfortable or good a seal they provide. Thanks

sadly, it's true, our forum search box sucks. :(

a way around it is to use, say, google. type in "cpaptalk.com airtouch f20" without the quotes, natch. you'll come up with oodles of talk. including this very thread!

good luck!

i tried using an air touch one day only------ and then the air fit (with a pad a cheek mask liner) the next day or two or three (or 6 at the beginning) ----to give the air touch a whole day or two or three to "breath and dry out"
also I set the air touch up real loose---just on the verge of leaking---so I didn't crush the memory foam too badly
------
splits are in the middle of the nose area in the air touch cushion---can anyone suggest a possible temporary repair (glue) to give a little longer use?

what we need is a disposable memory foam mask liner to go over the air fit!

Thanks for the very useful tip. I found lot of useful information including some YouTube videos on fitting the F20.

I have been using the AirTouch F20 cushions for that past few years. In my case, I get a better mask seal, and for me they are more comfortable than the AirFit 20 silicone cushion. They generally do not last as long as the AirFit silicone masks. Most of the time I get around 2 months out of the foam masks, while it is suggested to change out for a new one at 30 days. I can get many months out of the AirFit Silicone cushions, but I don't care for the leaks and the feel.

It is correct that when they split, it is almost always at the top of the nose. I had one split in about a week, but the one I am using now is over 3 months in.
I have found that proper fit is a big factor in making them last. It may take some time to figure out just the correct amount of tightening. Too much will definitely contribute to early failure. Despite the shorter life, I do find the comfort and seal to be worth the tradeoff.

I have not tried the pad a cheek liners. I may give that a go. If that solves the comfort and seal issues, that may be a better solution to using the longer lasting silicone cushions.

I just ordered 2 of the Padacheek liners. I still have a silicone cushion that's in good shape. If the liners work well for me, that should be more economical than buying the foam cushions.

Thanks for the hope jsmit86.
It gets complicated since I feel the headset changes shape when I wash it.
I have a list of videos to watch when I get home on adjusting the headset which I hope helps.

I have gone months on the Airtouch F20 cushions using padacheek liners. In fact I have a lot of extra supply now because I have not been changing at the suggested rate.

Without the liner it would be a whole other story. I have tried some other liner brands like the ones that are stretchable and have an elastic loop to collapse around the cushion. I find the fabric is not as comfortable and becomes very distracting on those. The cotton on padacheek is very comfortable. It is just a nuisance installing them because you had to remove the headgear requiring you to get back to the magic adjustment.

You definitely cannot make them too tight. I do tend to make slight tweaks in the liners. I have put two very small vertical slits on the top and bottom of the round nose hole in the liner.

no more headaches: are you putting the pad a cheek liners on the foam air touch cushions or the silicone airfit cushions?

I have done both but I am currently putting the pad a cheek liners on the Airtouch foam cushions.

The trick for me is to get the liners to be loose and not pulled tight.. When they are fresh out of the laundry they seem to be a little stiffer and loosen up over time.
I wish the tongues that reach up to the velcro were a little bit longer. As I also mentioned I cut little tiny slits in the liner nose hole at the top and bottom to loosen them as well.
You have to be careful not to make the slits too long.

myself, I find the foam to be softer on my nose than the pad a cheek liners, but YMMV

do you find the liners to be softer?
do you think the use of the liners extends the life of the touch foam cushions?

The full face mask eliminates the mouth pressure that causes me to open my mouth. The liners encourage me to breathe through my nose.
I have tried it initially without the liner and always suffered leaks at the nose and other places. The liners have improved my leaks dramatically and specifically the padacheek liners are the least irritating to my skin.

That being said I still have to be careful about over and under tightening of the headgear.
