Should I Have A New Sleep Study?

Post by cnl390 » Fri Sep 30, 2022 8:40 am

I have been doing ketovore for the past 8 months and have lost around 40 pounds. I feel great and have been sleeping extremely well. I just checked my stats on Oscar (I don't check it for months) and got the below results. Just wondering if anyone has been able to discontinue CPAP after losing weight? And if I might want to have a new sleep study done? I don't have a Photobucket account so I can't post an image, so here are my numbers for the past 30 days.
AHI 0.37, Obstructive 0.13, Hypopnea 0.12, Unclassified 0.02, Clear Airway 0.09, 95% Flow 0.06, RERA 0.11, Cheyne 0.00
Thanks

The low numbers are because you are using the CPAP. CPAP treats, it does not cure. A new sleep study would determine if you can discontinue the CPAP therapy.

I understand. I included the numbers just for reference. On this day in 2019 my AHI was 1.50

Weight is not the only factor but do have another sleep study to see.
fwiw - My avg AHI is .2 for the last year
I won't even think about quitting.

You could prob not use 1 nite and see how it affects you.

Yep. But I have read that studies show fatty tongue can lead to sleep apnea. Wondering if since I am not fat anymore, maybe my tongue isn't as well. LOL

If you have the means and desire to get a sleep study done to see if your weight loss has changed the severity of your sleep apnea, then go ahead.

Many here are doubtful because we have learned that weight, simply isn't the only (or primary) cause of sleep apnea.

You could of course do some simple at home studies by lowering your pressure gradually and checking your AHI and the way you feel.

Lowering your pressure settings could definitely tell you if you need less pressure now. People's pressure needs do change. But to learn whether you need to continue PAP, you should just go ahead and get a sleep test. Be sure to discontinue using PAP starting at least 3 days before the test. Me, I'd stop a week before, for good measure.

Just as a data point, I also lost about 40lbs, and had a new sleep study. While I had less apneas, I wasn't "cured", just had less. Still need a CPAP machine as before. However, no problem, I didn't lose the weight because I thought it would cure my sleep apnea, I lost the weight for my health. It could be different for you, but I had similar sleep apnea numbers to yours with a CPAP machine after weight loss. Before the weight loss I had 1 -2 apneas per hour using a CPAP. After the weight loss, I was down to around .5 apneas per hour while using CPAP. As you know, what a CPAP machine tells you about are the untreated apneas, not the ones that it prevented.

I really hope that you can stop using your CPAP, but chances are that isn't in the cards. On the other hand, you've most likely improved your overall health.
