Does CPAP help avoid covid?

Post by stevenal » Mon Sep 26, 2022 1:46 pm

My wife just got over a mild case of covid. We masked up at home, and I used another bedroom for a bit. No precautions prior to her deciding to test, though. We usually share a bed at night, yet I remain symptom free. Perhaps the fact that my air comes from the night stand on my side of the bed under an open window had something to do with my luck. Just thought I’d mention another possible health benefit to CPAP therapy.

Who knows ? Anecdotally my son -in -law and daughter who live in the same house with my husband and I both tested positive for covid. We did not take any extra precautions. Neither my husband nor I ever tested positive. I also worked in close quarters maskless with several who have tested positive and once again I have not gotten sick and have never tested positive either I am immune or I had no symptoms. Who knows?

My cpap has many times spared me the unpleasantness of a
bullfrog-induced Dutch Oven.
If there is an correlation, I cannot say; except that I am grateful for cpap.

It might well have kept you safe. I don't think we can know for sure.

There is no conclusive answer as to whether CPAP therapy can prevent a case of COVID-19. Furthermore, due to the existence of multiple strains, the answer might not be consistent across strains.

However, if your Sleep Apnea is successfully treated, you'll be in much better physical condition to recover!

Also the CPAP air is filtered so that may help. The one I use has an external large-particle filter and an inner filter for fine particles. I think most (all?) other machines do to.

Do you wear the mask when awake and around your wife? Any reason you haven't caught it then? Are you both vaxxed?

Omicron tends to cause relatively mild symptoms (or no symptoms at all) in vaccinated people. The downside is that many people are likely spreading the virus unintentionally.

The people who confuse "entomology" and "etymology" really bug me beyond words.

As someone who is on day 7 of COVID misery, I have my doubts about the theory that CPAP users are somehow less prone to catching COVID.
There are 3 people in my household 2 of use us APAPs and all 3 of us have COVID. My husband and I caught it while on a trip out of town and even though we masked inside our house as soon as we felt the very first possible symptoms we passed it onto our son. With the severe sore throat, congestion, coughing, and nausea it was incredibly difficult to keep using my CPAP during the worst of the illness (my son hasn’t been able to tolerate using his CPAP while sick with COVID). My husband who is the only one who doesn’t use CPAP in my household has completely recovered and was able to go back to work once he completed isolation, my son and I are both still symptomatic and having to continue isolation. I don’t think the severity of our illnesses has anything to do with who uses or doesn’t use CPAP, some people just get lucky and COVID doesn’t hit them as hard. I’m guessing COVID hit us all hard because it’s been about 10 months since our boost, we all had appointments to get our 2nd boosters but my husband and I got sick the day before the appointments.

Even though what we had would be considered “mild” COVID, it was absolute misery. I would argue that those of use who use PAP machines should be extra vigilant in protecting ourselves from COVID, it’s certainly not good to contract a virus that impacts your respiratory system when you already suffer from difficulties with breathing while asleep.

Only after she tested positive.

I work full time, and the the longest time spent close was in bed.

We are both vaccinated and double boosted. I added the bivalent booster several days after she tested positive.
