AS11 washable tub vs standard tub

Post by lynninnj » Tue Aug 16, 2022 5:41 pm

I’ve just been looking closely at my specs and re-reading the owners manual for my AS 11 autoset. it says there are two types of tubs available. One is the standard which is the one that I have and you have to use distilled water, and the other one is a “washable tub“. That one is supposed to be capable of using any drinking quality water.

The projected lifespan of the standard tub is six months. The washable tub is expected to last 2 1/2 years.

Does anyone know anything about these?

Just curious.

Honestly, I have tubs from many years before there was a tub you could put in a dishwasher. As long as you use distilled there won't be a need to put it in the dishwasher.

I tend to think they only came up with a dishwasher tub so they could sell more of them. Handling (dropping etc.) seems to be what causes the most damage. And the HOT dishwasher water and cycle can't be extending the life cycle.

But no matter what you decide make sure you get at least one spare first. In fact, get a spare of everything you need to sleep.

I don’t even mean the dishwasher per se.
You can use different water types and expected lifespan is different by factor of 5.

To OP - Suggest reading the sticky regarding water use (main page, regular threads, the sticky is in the first few threads). There are differences of opinion on whether distilled is required. In my particular case, I live in a town with extremely hard water. I clean the tub weekly by using a vinegar-water solution in the water tub. I just eyeball it and would guess it is 25% vinegar and 75% tap water. I let it soak a while then run my finger on the bottom of the tub, rinse, dry. It gets rid of the minerals on the bottom surface. My tub is 1.5 years old and works just fine.

This is specifically about what the AS11 instructions said.

https://document.resmed.com/documents/p ... er_mul.pdf

It’s mentioned on pg 6 of the guide which is also page 9 of 116.

Specifically the life span of the different parts is on pg 23 which is 26 of 119.

I know there’s been much discussion about diff water types etc.

I am asking if there’s something magical about the cleanable tub.

When I am eligible to get a new tub, wouldn’t it be best just to get the cleanable tub and use distilled water?

I mean 6m vs 2.5 yrs? What could be so different about them!

Yes, it would.

Price.

Most DMEs won't give you a choice. So it would likely be OOP.

Still begs the question of what makes it so special?

Heading over to our sponsor to see if I can find something there.

Pugsy once posted links showing that the masks have different replacement schedules depending on where in the world they are sold.
In the US, where some insurance companies have a "once in three months" replacement schedule, you'll find the masks do too.
Elsewhere, they don't.

The AS10 also has two type of tubs, so the "cheap vs. expensive" is not a new invention. If the only difference were "so they could charge more" why make a "cheap" one at all? And what if its the other way around? Maybe they figured that 5 x "cheap" (one replacement every 6 months!) gets them more earnings than 1 x "expensive"?

The manual you linked to is in "AmerEnglish". Here's a different manual, clearly part of a German / Multilingual guide:

https://document.resmed.com/documents/p ... er_mul.pdf

Page 15: Cleaning
Notes:
• The humidifier tub and outlet connector may be washed in a dishwasher
Ditto page 26, warranty of one year on humidifier tubs. Not word about different tubs.

One thing they're consistent about, through countries and models (my emphasis).
Humidifier tub - in warm water using a mild dishwashing liquid OR in a solution with a ratio of 1 part
vinegar and 9 parts water at room temperature
.

Thanks for those thoughtful replies.

I decided to see what our sponsor was offering. So far, there is no "washable" version for the AS11. However, the reviews for the washable version for the AS10 was basically that they were crap falling apart.

At the end of the day, both versions were $29 and $39. Nothing that will break the bank so at the end of the day......I just don't care.

For now I will continue to just wipe mine dry and let it air dry upside down on a dish cloth next to my cushion.

Thanks all.

When I wash my gear, I:
  • Shake to get rid of any accumulated water and drops
  • Immediately put back together on my CPAP and run the Mask Fit option for 2 or 3 sessions.
Air 11 users can also use the Test Drive feature to dry their gear.

The "replacement schedule" here in the US is purely a fabrication of greedy DME companies that have figured out that if they tell you to throw away your stuff as frequently as they can bill Medicare (an many insurance companies follow Medicares minimum replacement intervals), THEY'LL MAKE MORE MONEY.

Good thing the majority of CPAP users don't lease cars.

If they did, they'd be throwing their cars in landfills every three years and getting new ones.

What is this TEST DRIVE feature that you referred to on the Air 11?
I do not recall seeing this feature on my Air 11 machine.
