Newbie Desats preventing me from sleep

Post by Missyp » Sun Aug 07, 2022 6:50 am

I am new to CPAP. I began with nasal pillows and adjusted to them over a few days but they caused ear pain, I had to tape my mouth and my nosed stuffed up so I switched to the Airfit F30i full face mask. It's comfortable, but I am having trouble falling asleep with it. I have central apnea and when I'm drifting to sleep I can feel myself desaturating and it keeps me from going to sleep. I confirmed it by wearing a pulse oximeter and when I'm drifting to sleep and feel it I take a look and my oxygen is dropping and I can watch it continue to drop--I'm awake and breathing and it's still dropping. My CPAP is not responding of course because I'm breathing. The lowest it's been is 77%. Anyway, I'm not sure what to do. I didn't have the issue as much with the pillows and I'm thinking the lowest air pressure setting is too low. My range is 4 - 20. I happen to have Dysautonomia which is a factor in my breathing.

I don't have an oximeter on my machine. I only had a home sleep study and they didn't check oxygen levels during sleep. Of course, I know I need to request that be done. But in the meantime, I'm trying to figure out how to help myself. I'm planning to change my minimum pressure. Any thoughts on doing that and what it should possibly be set to? Or any other tips?

Thanks!

So please read this thread
viewtopic/t172378/Sticky--Newbies-PLEAS ... STING.html

We need to know what machine you are using and is it compatible with OSCAR.

There are overnight recording pulse oximeters that you can get that will work with OSCAR and cost is around 50 to 100 bucks depending on which model you get. Does your pulse oximeter record over night or does it just do spot checks?

Though I am very concerned that your O2 levels are dropping while awake at the beginning of the night.
If you are watching it drop then you aren't asleep and that means the problem is most likely something the machine can't fix.

You do need to alert your doctor to the fact that your O2 levels drop significantly while awake at the beginning of the night.

What is your recommendation for overnight pulse oximeters? OSCAR only list a few it works with. Is there a watch type that isn't too terribly expensive?
Are there other types of overnight monitoring in addition to pulse oximeter?

If you want to use OSCAR then you need to use something compatible with OSCAR.

As to which model it all depends on the features you want or need and how much you want to spend.
My personal preference would be the Contec CMS 50 Dplus or the Contec CMS 50 E or CMS 50 F and the higher in the alphabet you go the pricier it gets. The CMS 50 DPlus is the least expensive at around 50 bucks depending on where you get it. From Chine on the slow boat it is the least expensive. The more features it has the more costly.

I don't thing that there is any "watch type" that doesn't come with a pretty hefty price tag.
Again the more features it has...the higher the price.
