Oxygen Concentrator - high pitched whining coming from nasal cannula

Post by raisedfist » Tue Jun 21, 2022 10:11 am

I realize this is a CPAP forum, but I'm sure there are some oxygen users here that go beyond bleeding O2 into their device while sleeping. I have an Inogen at home concentrator (1 - 5 LPM) and when the nasal cannula is connected I can detect a high pitched whining sound coming from the nasal prongs, even at a lower flow of 2-3LPM. The concentrator itself sounds normal, all the filters are clean and in place, no airflow obstruction, no alarms or indications that anything is running amuck. This sound is annoying, and I've tried different branded cannulas, and there are no kinks in the tubing. Anyone have any ideas? I assume everything is working normally, but the rush of air coming from the cannula is not nearly as "smooth sounding" as my other concentrator and aside from confirming that air is coming out, and that the lights and alarms are all normal, I've checked my pulse oximeter of course, but I don't have an oxygen purity analyzer, and I didn't get the concentrator through a DME (out of pocket). Does such a sound mean something (meaningful) is most likely faulty? I'd hate to go through the hassle of sending this thing back just for a little high pitched noise.

Quick google search for high pitched whining coming from nasal cannula with inogen one
The nasal cannula connects to this nozzle for Inogen One® G3 ... Increasing the cannula length may reduce the perceived noise during oxygen bolus delivery.
There were other results you'll find if you google it. I can use my nasal cannula with 7 foot tubing on my Respironics without noise from the cannula. YMMV

Thanks for the info I'll check out the results. Oddly enough I just rechecked all the filters, put everything back together, changed from a 25ft tube to a 14 ft tube, and so far so good. *shrugs*

And who knows what tonight will bring. Either way to seems to be affected by the length of the hose.
