Well, seeing as that's what the forum's about, you coulda been more clear to begin with - or are you just having fun perchance?
Having fun was not intended! And yes, I should have been clear that I meant “normal, not under treatment”.

What I actually thinking about was measuring flow during a home sleep study (which is intended to be representative of “normal (untreated) breathing). Among my relatives, no one reported that they had to have their mouth closed, their flow was measured by a nasal cannula.

I thought the appropriate beginning point was how people breathe while awake - speculating that if someone lets some air in through the mouth during wakefulness they may be likely to also do the same during sleep.
I am neither a physician nor a lawyer, so DO NOT rely on me for professional medical or legal advice.

What I could never figure out is, nasal pillows, not all are mouth breathers, but most diagnosed with sleep apnea, are snorers (mouth breathers) ???
One does not need to have one's mouth open in order to snore.
Very true, but most sleep with mouth open, even slightly.
Not true.

No pun intended, reason, I came up with this thought is, my younger brother is on cpap, uses nasal pillows. His wife complained he still snored loud as h***, and he refuses to tape his mouth or use FFM. He's very stubborn
If he's snoring, then his pressure is too low.
Let me rephrase, all males in my family snore with mouth open. My nephew snores like Apollo rocket launch  Doesn't want sleep study due to cost. My family is very stubborn.

Truth is, I really don't know.... He's been on cpap 10 years, has other health issues as well. Treatment were probably working at first, but overtime adjustments need to be made, he gained alot of weight, approx 50-60 lbs due to medications, diet, lifestyle. Haven't talked to him in awhile, I'll get updates in the future....

It's now thought that, if anything, apnea is at least partly responsible for weight gain - just the opposite of what was told to all years ago.

Can't blame him, he could however, just buy a used machine and learn to treat himself for way less than most sleep studies, though home studies can be very good, and still not very expensive.
