Transcend Auto CPAP burnt smell

Post by jimci1234 » Fri Mar 21, 2014 8:58 am

I just recieved the Transcend Auto Travel CPAP Machine with EZEX and it gives off a burnt smell through the hose and mask. Is this common and will go away after a break in period? I don't recall this issue with my larger Respironics CPAP.

We have a very few Transcend users here on the forum..so not many users to report on anything but I haven't seen anyone mention a burnt smell.

I bought a new Transcend 3 auto miniCPAP a couple of weeks ago and noted the same burnt plastic smell you refer to. I called the vendor, and they agreed it is not normal. Vendor cross-shipped another Transcend 3 auto miniCPAP machine. Just received the second machine, and it, too, emits the burned plastic smell.

Did the smell from your Transcend 3 machine every go away with time? If so, how long did it take?

Some smell may have remained in the mask and hose.
Or are you using a different mask and hose?

The OP is a Hit'n'Run artist. Came here posted and never heard from again, it's been over 6 years.

Six years . . .
Not even remotely possible with temperatures/materials used.
Olfactory delusions can occur with stroke, dementia.
Maybe just trolls.

I don't know about the OP, but I'm still here. I'm not a troll, just a CPAP user dealing with a new experience: a brand new CPAP machine that emits a strange smell when I use it. It's not coming from the hose or mask. When I use the same hose and mask with my older Transcend autopap machine, there is no smell. When I turn on the new Transcend 3 machine with no hose or mask attached, the same smell is there. When I attach the hose and mask and use the machine, the smell is there. When I use the new hose that came with the Transcend 3 machine with the old mask, the smell is there. When I use the Transcend 3 machine with the new hose and a different mask, the smell is there. The only constant in all those scenarios is the new Transcend 3 machine. I have used at least 8 different CPAP machines over the past 20 years, and none of them have emitted an odor, either when new or later on.

The vendor who recently sold both new Transcend 3 machines to me advised that they contacted the manufacturer Somnetics, and Somnetics blames "environmental" factors, i.e., something in the house, or the hose, or the mask. They admit to no complaints from other Transcend 3 purchasers. Yet, the smell remains. I am not making this up!

One "workaround" I have tried with some success is masking the smell by wiping a small amount of alcohol-based after shave on the inside of the male fitting to which the hose attaches right before bedtime. That masked the smell enough to enable me to get to sleep last night. But, when I woke up in the a.m., the "burnt plastic" smell was still notable.

I am hoping the burnt plastic smell will go away with time. Perhaps it is just off-gassing from the plastic that Somnetics is using to make the new Transcend 3. But, the smell remains for now. After having the same experience with two successive Transcend 3 machines, I have posted on this forum in the hope that any other Transcend 3 purchaser who encounters a similar problem, and anyone considering the purchase of a Transcend 3, might benefit from my experience.

Not a lot of people have Transcend machines.
I considered getting one many years ago, but bought a Devillbiss Auto instead.
Considering your experience, Transcend must not care about expanding their sales . . .
Your testing is comprehensive enough to point to a real problem.
If you can, demand a refund, not a replacement.

Not sure if you're still around, but I just purchased a Transcend 3 MiniCpap and am having the same problem.

Definitely a plastic smell. I don't know how long off-gassing lasts, but I've let the machine run on its own for several hours, and it's still just as bad. I'd like to do more than just mask the smell--although I realize that there are dicey chemicals in all CPAPs, given the Phillips recall, I suspect that some might be worse than others. I don't know that my nose is necessarily the best judge of what's a carcinogen, but I'm going to trust it. One thing I noticed is that although Somnetics' website showed a machine with the word "auto" on the face of the machine, this one simply says "Transcend 3 Minicpap." The rep I spoke to (he was very nice; they're based in Minnesota...) said that it's still an auto despite the name, and I believe him. I'm intrigued that even your old Transcends didn't smell as bad--I'm wondering if they are getting rid of these models because they smell worse.

In the meantime, I'm using the HME that I bought for the Transcend with my Phillips to block the particulate (recall!). This may be a terrible idea, but that's for another thread....

- Phillips Respironics REMSTAR Plus C-Flex (recalled and spitting particulate!)

Sounds like you don't have a clue about what your pressure settings are? Now that you are here, knock around the forum and learn how to take control of your therapy.

Wow, perhaps I misunderstood your tone, but I don't believe I've ever received a snarkier 'welcome' to a forum.

I can figure out if it's auto or not--I'd just gotten the machine in the mail and was also having problems downloading the software (it has no menus on the machine). My point at the time was just that different models may (or may not) have the same smell issue. Regardless, since then I've found comments elsewhere online about the smell issue on all of these Transcend 3's, so I plan to return it and look for another product.
