at home sleep study

Post by goldfinch » Mon May 16, 2022 6:17 pm

in 2011 I had an in lab sleep study. Found to have moderate sleep apnea (6.7 event per hour). Prescribed an auto PAP by resmed. For years my pressures averaged around 10 and events 2 or less. Now my pressures range 13-14 and events range from 3 to 7 averaging about 3.8. I am not sleeping well.

My regular doc thought it might be a machine issue but for medicare to pay for a new machine they wanted a new at home sleep study. I sleep terribly the night of the study, waking up many times. Today I got the study results:
"Very mild obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome with a minimally elevated
apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of 5.2 and very mild associated hypoxia. The
patient spent 15 minutes with oxygen saturations of 90% or less with only 6
minutes of recording time with oxygen saturations of 88% or less."

" RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Clinical correlation of above is needed.
2. If ongoing CPAP therapy is deemed warranted, then the patient would be
a good candidate for continued auto-titrating CPAP.
3. However, other treatment options for very mild obstructive sleep
apnea-hypopnea syndrome are available.
4. Positional therapy with or without the use of mandibular advancement
device might be considered. Surgery can be appropriate in select
patients."

This makes little sense to me. How can I have so few apneas, given the fact my machine is pumping out high pressure and I still have so many events?

Have you looked at your graphs to see what's going on?

There is no relationship between level of sleep apnea and pressure setting. Someone (like yourself) may have mild sleep apnea and need a high pressure setting where someone with moderate or severe may only need a very low pressure to be adequately treated.

Thanks. It is just such a change and the higher pressure is waking me up.

I do have OSCAR software installed but I know nothing about analyzing it. The concerning thing is the high number of apneas on some nights.

oh, please don't worry about trying to analyze your graphs. i know very little about oscar. i know just enough to post the graphs to the forum. the expert tea leaf readers here know how to get to the bottom of things.

so feel free to post your graphs here for others to see and comment upon. it's really helpful in your sleep apnea journey.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.
