DreamWear nasal Cushion air vent makes a high pitch whistle noise

Post by watertrails » Thu Apr 21, 2022 5:16 pm

I just got a Respironics DreamWear nasal Cushion . THe air vent on the mask sometimes makes avery high pitch whistle noise. I can cover the air slit with my finger and it stops. I pull out the 2 ends away from my face and invert it some and it stops it for a while. I love the mask if not for that. Has anyone else had this problem ?

I have been fitting patients with sleep systems for about 30 years. Respironics are the main systems and now we have added Aeonmed. We help patients with other systems such as ResMed, F&P etc..

You are correct from time to time we do have incidents, when fitting patients for masks, where the vent at the front of the Dreamwear Nasal Pillow and Nasal Cushion makes a noticeable sound such as muffled whistling or dull hissing. I have found that this seems to disappear when the patients are sleeping. Not sure if in all cases but would have expected to hear complaints if it did continue.

I agree with you again. I love the Dreamwear mask system. I have had patients that have been using ResMed masks for years thinking there is nothing better only to use the Dreamwear and ask where has this mask been all these years. The Dreamwear mask system has made my job far easier and more pleasant. Far less patient mask issues. far happier patients, and that is always a good thing.

Sure there are issues. Some patients are initially hypersensitive to the very low sound of the air flowing through the flat tubing that runs from the top of the head, above their ears, along their cheeks and to the mask. Typically they normalize in a few days. The fact that the main tubing goes from their machine to the top of their head as opposed to their nose has been a huge benefit to the patients. No longer fighting the "snake" (main hose) in their sleep. The main hose going directly to the nose/face, as in the case of the F20, has always been a challenge. With the Dreamwear comfort shoots up and we have consistently found less leaks in the morning reports.

One of the patients who has a ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet did a night by night comparison between the F20 Full Facemask and Dreamwear Full Facemask system. He commented that he realized that no mask is perfect. With the ResMed F20 he found that air escaped around his nose and into his eyes unless he pulled the frame tightly to a level of discomfort. He commented that the Dreamwear was slightly louder than the F20 but overall more comfortable, especially without the cheek sleeves.

I would be interested to learn if the whistling goes away when you sleep. If you had to do something for it to go away. Or if it does not go away. What is your P90 typically.

Have you tried simply replacing the cushion? It may be a defect in THAT cushion.

I had a similar whistling/noisy venting problem with the Bleep that stopped when the vent was covered.

Other than replacing cushion, you could try attaching a diffuser with rubber bands and a ResMed filter at the vent.

It solved the noise problem for me.
I think the reduced air speed at the vent was the key

Mini hijack ...

Have you considered trying/recommending hose lifts.
They make front hose mask such as the minimal P10 that much more comfortable than using full face masks such as Vitera or F30 (for me anyways)

I have been using the Dreamware nasal pillow for about two weeks. My first effort at treatment for sleep apnea. The small rectangular vent in the front of the mask whistles loudly sporadically. At first it seemed to happen halfway through the ramp up (ResMed Airsense 11) but would stop if I tapped my finger against the vent a few times. I had to do this 3-5 times as the whistling returned but then it would quieten down for most of the rest of the night. However last night it whistled repeatedly throughout the night so that my sleep was quite interrupted all night. Any suggestions appreciated.

The Dreamware products look similar to the ones on the and the N30/N30i. Is it possible you didn't quite get a full attachment?

I found that if I didn't quite get the removable/washable piece back in place correctly it would leak terribly. Yours sounds a bit like a mini leak. Curious what your air pressures/leaks look like comparatively speaking. Might shed some insight?

You used terms cushion and pillow. The cushion is soft all around and the pillows aren't so pillowlike but go just up into the nose. Not sure which one you have but Resmed makes the N30 and N30i (cushions) and the P10 (pillow). The i is over the head connection and the others are hoses off the front of the mask. If you find the one you are using is totally distracting you might try one of the others? I think pugsy had a P10 for sale cheaper than you would buy it thru a vendor or you might find a new one on Ebay if you wanted to try at a discount.

Sorry that hasn't been more helpful.
