Traveling with CPAP

Post by kiefferfam » Mon Jan 24, 2022 11:42 am

We will be traveling to the Dominican in a few weeks. CPAP is new to me since the last time we traveled. Is it okay to use bottled water while I'm there vs Distilled water? I really don't know how I would get distilled water since we are staying at a resort and we will be going from the airport to the resort on a shared shuttle so it's not like we can stop off anywhere.

Just curious what other people have done in this situation.

Yes, it is OK.
Try to avoid "mineral" water, which is harmless to you,
but a crunchy mess in your tank.

You have several options.
1. Do as indicated above
2. Call the resort to ask if they can/will provide you with distilled. I know cruise lines do.
3. Bring your own distilled in smaller capped bottles either bought or rinsed out pop bottles.
4. https://www.cpap.com/search/cz1yZWxldmF ... e%20travel
5. Do w/o water.

If you bring your own remember you can also drink it should the need arise.

Safe Travels to you.

I used to travel for a living and tried several ways to deal with water. Carrying distilled was too much trouble and didn't last long. Looking for distilled in a hotel or downtown area was a lost cause. Rarely found a pharmacy nearby (CVS, Walgreens) that had it. Basically only supermarkets have it and they typically aren't located in a business district. So I gave up and went with regular bottled water. Through trial and error I found that "purified water" was readily available and left the least sediment behind, nearly as good as distilled. Most of my travel was by air and I would pick up a few bottles after landing before I left the TSA security area. Hotels and other local stores have plenty of springwater and mineral water, but often didn't have purified.

Purified water. Another common type of bottled water you will often see is purified water. It is water that undergoes a bottled water purification process like reverse osmosis.
Mineral water. Bottled mineral water is full of nutrients. It contains dissolved minerals like calcium, potassium, iron and so forth.
Springwater. Springwater is that type of bottled water which requires minimal treatment before it is bottled.

Spring water varies depending on the geology at the source. (The spring)
It can be sweet and very soft, like in the sandhills where I lived--
or full of all kinds of minerals if that is what is in the aquifer.
The designation "spring" water is meaningless without an assay of the content.

I've traveled a fair amount in my day and learned to have everything I need with me in case I was re-routed or worse had to sleep in the airport. And I just will not pay $4 for a bottle of water - sorry. And in case it came down to it I could always wet my whistle with distilled.

While I have learned that being prepared can help in emergencies - today with all the flight cancellations I think is even more reason to stay prepared.

No doubt. Water is outrageously expensive at the airport, and stuff gets lost. It's a real problem.

I've traveled quite a bit with my machine and have just used bottled water. Keep in mind your CPAP and carrier are not supposed to count as your personal item, as durable medical equipment it's exempt from being considered luggage with most airlines.

I had issues once with AA when I first got my CPAP, but most airlines have been ok with three bags. But even if they let you on the plane with three bags, you still have to find a place to store them. In those circumstances, the airlines have been less generous. I have always found it was easier to make it fit inside my backpack with my laptop. I just use a generous-sized pack back. That became more possible as they got smaller. I would use bottled water when I traveled especially in countries like India. I would always recommend traveling with an extension cord/small travel power strip as you never know where the outlets in a room will be.

I own a travel CPAP and found it very convenient when I was traveling "a lot", especially when traveling overseas on overnight flights. Prior to COVID, I was making monthly trips to Europe. I don't think it's worth it for occasional travel.

Any flight that originates or terminates inside the USA has to follow TSA guidelines.
3-1-1 Liquids Rule Exemption

TSA allows larger amounts of medically necessary liquids, gels, and aerosols in reasonable quantities for your trip, but you must declare them to TSA officers at the checkpoint for inspection.

Remove them from your carry-on bag to be screened separately from the rest of your belongings. You are not required to place your liquid medication in a plastic zip-top bag. If a liquid, gel, or aerosol declared as medically necessary alarms, then it may require additional screening and may not be allowed.

How about if you are traveling in the north east this weekend with over 4500 flights canceled and no idea where you would end up sleeping or for how long?

For me - I'd want to have everything I needed right with me.

Good point
Imagine when 9/11 suddenly happened and ALL the passenger aircraft were grounded and you were stuck where ever you were with what ever you had for how ever long?
