CPAP Shortage

Post by JeffL » Thu Jan 13, 2022 8:52 pm

It's time for my 5 year Resmed Air Sense 10 machine replacement but it seems like all the distributors have it back ordered and don't know when they will be delivered. Has anyone here heard anything?

just to bring you up to speed, resperonics has had a major recall on their products, due to their foam disintegrating in their machines. this is a major er, mess up which will take them seemingly forever to fix. as you might imagine, folks effected by their recall are looking for machines, ANY machines. so that's happening.

then fold into that this thing called "supply chain issues". perhaps you've heard of it?

put these together and resmed machines are as scarce as hens teeth. prices have gone up and they are hard to find.

nobody knows when this cluster *%$@ will end. my advice is to look for used machines. forum friend lsat can often get mitts on airsense 10 machines. you may want to pm him.

other than that, looks ebay or facebook or whoever the hell else for a used machine.

you may try secondwindcpap. but brace yourself. this is a sellers market.

good luck!
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

If you want to use your insurance to get a new machine you will just have to use your DME and wait until they can get a supply of ResMed machines.
The shortage is very real. ResMed has a new model...the AirSense 11 models and you can't find them online anywhere.
They are going to DMEs and doctors sleep clinics for now.
For now ResMed is manufacturing both the AirSense 10 models and the AirSense 11 models to try to fill the void.

So if you want to involve your insurance you will have to wait.
How long? No one really knows but I have heard through the rumor mill that look for things to not ease up until mid summer this year.

And if you look online at prices for AirSense 10 models....be prepared to have major sticker shock.
ResMed knows they have a captive market with the Respironics recall...and they are making as much money off of it as they possibly can. The good old American way....capitalism...supply and demand causes major price increases for both new and used machines.

Thanks for the info.

Yes, I want Medicare and my insurance to pick up the tab, so I guess I'll have to wait. They give me a free ride every 5 years so I just want to take advantage of it. I'm OK as long as my S10 holds up and I have my old S9 for backup if needed. I didn't know about the S11 until after I posted. I guess that's the one to wait for.

If you decide you can't wait for DME/Insurance and want to purchase new, I got one at the end of November at Hart Medical online courtesy of one of my dear daughters. I hated taking money from her so I searched for the lowest price I could find at a place that actually had them in stock (I did call to verify first) Base price was and still is 799$ but they have a 20% discount on ResMed stuff (RESMED20) that brought it down to 639$ for the machine. I also bought a mask etc but total was under 800$ which is terrible but about as good as it seems to get for new self-pay. My daughter paid late on a Friday afternoon and I had it on Thursday morning. No affiliation or anything and sorry if this breaks any rules - just hoping to possibly be helpful and am too old and tired to remember which groups are which.

Don't expect to get a new machine every five years if you are on Medicare. They no longer provide new machines every five years. They only replace machines that are not working properly and and cost too much to repair. When I was at the sleep clinic last month, the nurse practitioner said the Resmed representative had been in a few days earlier and told her they are having getting machines. Everything is tied up on container ships waiting to be unloaded.

Maybe only ONE train, but the LA media . . .

At least 17 cargo trains derailed near Lincoln Heights

This attitude of entitlement drives me crazy! (to put it mildly)
I believe that you will be waiting a LONG time......and deservedly so.

In addition to the recall and supply chain issues, there's an additional issue.

Many CPAP machines were repurposed to treat COVID-19 patients. That means that those machines are not available to treat Sleep Apnea.

"Entitlement?"
FYI: Medicare is not free.
I pay my premiums.
It's only reasonable to expect my money's worth.
Aetna has made a pile on my supplement--except maybe one month.
That was when they implanted my chemo port.
Otherwise, they have been RAKING it in.
Medicare--yep, I paid for that, too--and am still paying.

Well, you know how it is, some people's brains are just too small to see the big picture, and expecting to get value from something you've *paid* for, outrageous, isn't it?

ASS-uming everyone but them is "on the dole", of course.
My attitude--"There but for the grace of God, go I."
Never occurs to some.
Alarming how devastating a little bad luck can be . . .
And there is plenty of THAT to go around.
I'd cross my fingers, but those silly webs keep me honest.
