Fed up with spluttering, what can I do ?

Post by BlizzardUK » Tue Dec 07, 2021 12:31 pm

I use nasal pillows, and for the last 2 months I keep getting woken up with spluttering of water and gurgling noises. I then have to take the mask off, de-attach the pillows, then swing the tube around to remove excess water. Then a couple of hours later I will be woken up again with the same. I have a heated hose, put on number 4 on the Respironics 560P dial, I have the humidity put on only 1. I didn't have this problem for the previous 6 months, seems to have been just when the weather changed, unless that is coincidence. Any idea why this could be happening ? Why does it splutter, spit and gurgle ? I have heard of rainout but I thought a heated hose stops that ?

Cooler weather means more condensation. Try upping the temperature a little bit, and invest in a hose cover. I use one made out of soft terrycloth, and I got an extra long one and scrunched it up. This provides a lot of insulation.

Also place the machine lower than yourself and the water will run back to it, rather than to you.

What is your bedroom temperature now?

It all depends on how cold the bedroom ambient temps are. The heated hose can only do so much warming...and remember there is usually a non heated hose coming after the heated hose that goes to the mask..and when we have water in the nasal pillows...often that heated hose air simply gets cooled off too much by the time the air makes it to the face.

Either increase the hose air temp...and/or add a hose cozy over the short hose from the end of the heated hose to the mask so that the air in the non heated hose can stay warmer.

Or...increase the bedroom air temperature.

I have the same issue going from summer to fall. I manually adjusted the humidity control on my machine down one notch.

Girl's knee socks from the dollar store--cut the toes off, and line up a few on your hose.

Thanks everyone. My bedroom is usually around 30 percent humidity and 20 degrees centigrade for warmth. I will try a hose cover for the shorter hose part, thanks for the advice, will let you know how I get on.

When was the last time that your heated hose was replaced with a new one?

Keep in mind, although unlikely, it's possible for the heated hose to have stopped working.
