Used Mouth Tape for First Time - Amazing Results

Post by AcedDublB » Thu Nov 18, 2021 11:28 am

I have been using my PR Dreamstation BiPAP and Quattro Air FFM for exactly 6 years and have rarely been able to achieve nightly AHI lower than the recommended 5.0 Most nights I am mid teens or even higher. I use RemZzzs each night.

I am a chronic mouth breather and thought that is most of my problem. Searching on Amazon for Mouth Tape I found and purchased a 60 pack of Azazar mouth tape for $15 Cdn, 25 cents each.

First night of use was great, AHI of 4.6 and second night even lower at 3.5. Needless to say I was ecstatic with these results while being upset with myself for not trying this technique sooner. I tried reusing the mouth tape the second night but it was a little loose in the morning but must have stayed in place sufficiently to give me the 3.5 AHI.

These are very easy to get used to and I ordered another box today. Lots of very positive reviews on Amazon for this product.

Hopefully this will help someone in the same situation.

Many thanks for posting about your experience with this product. Do you think you're waking up less often with the tape? And do you know the breakdown of your AHI (central apnea, obstructive apnea, hypopnea). If you do, it'd be interesting to know.

The effectiveness of mouth taping is under-appreciated.
Many providers refuse to even consider it, because of aspiration of reflux.
If you have GERD, the likelihood of this happening is more likely.
I prefer using a Chin-up strip, a U-shaped tape applied below the lower lip,
pulling it over the upper lip, with the ends affixed below the outer corners of the nose.
Look in the mirror--if you think "bulldog", you did it right.
Note: no tape is stuck to the upper lip, and it is possible to talk or cough,
but it is quite awkward.

I agree that mouth taping needs to be mentioned a LOT more and should become standard advice to many patients. The pressure may be able to blow most users' mouths open repeatedly during the night. It could be the main reason people do not succeed with PAP alongside the very common problem of someone receiving straight CPAP but really needing another form of care, like BiPAP.

Totally agree - after starting to use my AirSense 10, there were a couple of mornings when I would have an absolutely dry mouth on waking. My partner is a nurse and had a roll of surgical tape. I read about the mouth tape here so - I tear off a 1cm (1/2 inch) strip which I fix in the middle of my lips. Enough to still be able to say a few words if needed! But since I started, no dry mouth. Can highly recommend!

Well after the first few successful nights this brand of mouth tape didn’t continue to be sufficient as the adhesion was not strong enough.

I returned the Azazar X-type strips and purchased the 3M Micropore 2” wide tape and had amazing results every night, AHI of 1.0 and 1.5 which is what I want. Terrific adhesion and extremely cost effective.

I am going to prepare a new post accordingly.
