Understand my new Resmed Airsense 11Autoset

Post by dataq1 » Fri Oct 22, 2021 9:37 am

This is actually my wife's new machine,
Settings:
Mode:APAP Min 5 Max 15
Ramp 35, Ramp Pressure 4.0
Smart start/stop = On
1) I've noticed that after the mask is removed (and smart stop shuts down the machine) that air is still being pushed out of the hose for some minutes, is this expected?
2) When does a recording session begin and end and does a session need to be a specific length of time before data is recorded?
(For example, machine was used from 21:00 until 04:00 the next day. At 0800 I imported data to OSCAR. At 0910 we had a short session of approximately 5 minutes. Then imported again, but the short session did not show up in OSCAR)
So this question also relates to, when does Resmed consider a "new" day beginning, and does a breathing session have to be a some length of time to recorded.
3) Are there differences (in Flow Limitation performace) between masks?
(I am particularly interested in Flow Limtations as recorded by Resmed and reported by Oscar. How would flow limitations be impacted by changing the mask from Resmed's E30 to FP 431. BTW, my wife and I both observe that use of the E30 mask seems to favor mouth breathing, while use of the FP 431 seems to promote breathing through the nose).
4) Am I correct in my observation that Resmed does no Flow Limitation grading during ramp?

1...normal cool down period. Usually for about 30 minutes after ceasing use of machine the machine will still blow air at a very low volume. This is to help dry out the mask and/or hose. ResMed machines have done this for years. Should be explained in the manual.

2...New sessions start at noon per the machine clock...24 hour reporting...so noon to noon.
Don't know about really short sessions yet with the AirSense 11 models. You could try purging the data from that date and then reimporting and see if it shows up or not. You could also look inside the files and see if there is even a file generated for that 5 minutes of use.

3...No...unless the different masks somehow altered the airway in some manner. Example...straps altering jawline or cushion compressing the nasal cavity in some way.

4...Correct...during ramp NOTHING is flagged at all. No FLs, no OAs, no hyponeas, no centrals, no leaks...nothing.
Which is why we like to keep ramp time to a minimum if used at all. Can't tell what is going on at all.

You correct (mostly).

Expanding on Pugsy's answer.

It depends what type of Ramp. ResMed has two types of Ramp and they behave differently.
  • Timed Ramp: You set the ramp time in 5 minute increments. Ramp will gradually increase the pressure from the Ramp Pressure to your Start Pressure in a straight linear increase. During timed ramp there is no monitoring or event flagging.
  • AutoRamp: AutoRamp puts you in "Ramp" mode and leaves the pressure at the configured ramp pressure. When switching to therapy mode it will then gradually change the pressure from Ramp Pressure to Start Pressure gradually. During AutoRamp, the device is monitoring events, but not flagging them. If your events warrant leaving Ramp Mode, it will exit Ramp mode and enter Therapy Mode. Specifically:
    • 5 consecutive snores
    • 3 obstructive apneas or hypopneas within 2 minutes
Flow limitations is not one of the monitored criteria that can exit AutoRamp

I tend to answer the question(s) as presented.
Since Ramp was mentioned and not Auto Ramp....that's why I didn't go into Auto Ramp.
Thank you for further expanding though.

My typing is still extremely limited and will be for several weeks. I am trying to keep my answers short and sweet...and that's a challenge in itself. I simply cannot cover all bases at all times.

I accidentally tagged you, I meant to tag the OP. My apologies, I didn't mean to suggest you weren't correct. I'm going to fix the incorrect quote tag.

No problem.
I will leave what I said mainly to let people know why I limit my responses. What I typed above took me over 30 minutes to compose. Something that would normally take maybe 2 minutes. Sigh....just another one of the joys of getting old.

Anytime anyone wants to go into more detail than I might go into....go for it. I don't care.
Just try to avoid quoting me and making me feel like a dufus.  No one wants to be a dufus.

How long did it take her to get the Airsense 11? Where do you live?
