pressure difference with new mask?
Hello fellow cpap users,
I attempted to post something earlier but I am not sure it went through...
I am a new cpap user, 1 month in. I am currently using the Airsense 11 Auto CPAP with humidifier and heated tub with the Philips Dreamware Full Face mask. My current settings are as follows: 9 - 11 Pressure, Auto Ramp, Pressure Relief setting is on, Climate control is on Auto. For the past month I have been using my machine with the Dreamware mask. I am doing well with the therapy where I feel comfortable and my sleep is much better.
Though the dreamware mask is fine, I wanted to try the Resmed AirFit F30i as I noticed that the cushion for this mask is a bit different and may be more comfortable. I tried the F30i last night and although it felt more comfortable than with the dreamware, in terms of how it fits on my face, it was not at all comfortable when the therapy started. With the F30i the air pressure felt much stronger in the mask and was also louder. I even adjusted the straps to ensure there was a good seal, but I was not able to get to sleep with it and had to switch back to the dreamware.
To your knowledge, for anyone who has experience with these masks - why would there be a difference in how the air pressure feels is inside the mask?
I appreciate any feedback you can provide!
Joel

The pressure is the same, however the force is greater, since it covers a larger area of your face. (force=pressure*area).

That makes sense….so I would need to adjust the pressure settings then? I like this mask better than the dreamware but the force of air is not comfortable.

I use those two masks interchangeably. No need to adjust the pressure. Feel no difference in pressure inside the mask.
Don't understand what is happening in your case.

a dreamwear that cradles under the nose doesn't cover as much as one that goes over the nose.ChicagoGranny wrote: ↑Fri Oct 08, 2021 3:47 pmThe two masks referenced cover approximately the same amount of area.
Edit: I'm wrong

One "could" try the nasal mask setting, and see how it feels . . .

The pressure is the same. It's the way you're experiencing it that's different!

Do you notice any difference between the two? Last night I tried the f30i again, and though the pressure felt more comfortable, it is louder when i inhale compared to the dreamware.ChicagoGranny wrote: ↑Fri Oct 08, 2021 3:45 pmI use those two masks interchangeably. No differences in noise, pressure, leak level. No difference in data (OSCAR).Redstormsju wrote: ↑Sat Oct 09, 2021 4:28 amDo you notice any difference between the two? The DreamWear is a bit more comfortable. However, after three or four nights, the sharp edge of the "mustache piece" rubs a cut where it touches my nose.
Each of the two masks he is using cradle under the nose.

Re: pressure difference with new mask?
Thank you all for your help and information so far. As a new cpap user, I want to learn to make my therapy as effective as possible - this forum has been very helpful so far.
Currently I am using the F30i mask…my doctor recommended this mask and did my sleep study with the Dreamware mask because I have been a mouth breather when I sleep - partly congestion due to allergies and probably a deviated septum. During the two months I have been using cpap therapy, I dont believe I have been breathing through my mouth.
I eventually would like to try a nasal mask, as I am thinking it may make the use of a mask more comfortable. Having said that, I understand this will be so if I dont breathe through my mouth while I sleep. My question is this - currently my cpap pressure is set to 9 -12. If I was to venture in trying a nasal mask, would my pressure settings need to be adjusted?
My settings on my Airsense 11 are as follows…. Mode is set to AutoSet. AutoSet Response is Soft. 9 - 12 Pressure. Ramp Time is Auto, Pressure relief is ON, ERP is Full time at level 3.

Re: pressure difference with new mask?
No not really any need to adjust anything except mask type setting (and even that isn't the end of the world if you forget).Redstormsju wrote: ↑Sun Oct 17, 2021 4:51 pmMy question is this - currently my cpap pressure is set to 9 -12. For sure not an increase but a lot of people who go from full face to nasal mask have found they can get by with less minimum and not have AHI worsen.
Probably not that big of a deal with your 9 cm minimum but when people are in the mid teens using a full face mask and they get to drop the pressure a couple of cm it's always a nice bonus.

Maybe they need to be adjusted now. Are you reviewing your daily AHI and leak level that shows on the machine display?Redstormsju wrote: ↑Sun Oct 17, 2021 4:51 pmIf I was to venture in trying a nasal mask, would my pressure settings need to be adjusted?
