Surprising AHI improvment on ASV with switch to ResMed
Surprising AHI improvment on ASV with switch to ResMed
Because of the recall, I have been switched from a Phillips to a ResMed ASV machine. On my old Phillips, my AHIs were getting ever so slightly worse over 7 years, starting at 0-1.0 at the beginning of that time period and gradually increasing to 3-ish recently when I switched.
With a week's use of my new ResMed ASV, my AHI has ranged from 0.0 to 0.3. via the machine's readout but also verified by OSCAR. This surprised me.
So question is, have others noticed this, are machine AHIs reliable, do ResMed's ASVs work better, was my 7 year old Phillips machine pooping out....? Or some other factor I haven't even thought of?
Thanks for any comments you might have. There may be no answer of course, but it is a noticeable data change.

Different algorithms....Most people who go from Respironics algorithm to ResMed see a substantial difference in results or AHI to the better. You aren't alone.

Re: Surprising AHI improvment on ASV with switch to ResMed
it's a shame that it took this catastrophe from philips to show folk what has been known for some time.
i've had the opportunity to compare philips and resmed side by side. once i got over the difference in algorithms, i'm quite satisfied with my resmed.

Re: Surprising AHI improvment on ASV with switch to ResMed
I believe Resmed Invented the ASV, and they've always just done better than second best. their APAPs have a better algorithm, their auto bilevels work better, it's really no surprise that their ASVs are just better too

Re: Surprising AHI improvment on ASV with switch to ResMed
Which then makes one wonder why my sleep specialist doctor prescribed the Phillips ASV way back in 2014 instead of the ResMed. I suppose there might be some synical answers to this question, but since he is highly trained and has apnea himself, he might have known this. He told me back then that he thought the Phillips machines were superior. Hmmmm. Makes one wonder.
Regardless, I am pleased that I now have a week of AHIs beteeen 0.0 and 0.6. Remarkable.

It is a very rare sleep doctor, who looks at one's therapy detail data, scrutinizes, and optimizes. If your AHI is under 5, they consider you treated.photonic wrote: βSat Sep 18, 2021 10:06 amWhich then makes one wonder why my sleep specialist doctor prescribed the Phillips ASV way back in 2014 instead of the ResMed. Given that they aren't scrutinizing your detail data, they really aren't in a position to be comparing performance between brands.

Re: Surprising AHI improvment on ASV with switch to ResMed
Nice point. helpful perspective!
Having a great deal of experience in the medical field I have now come to understand there may be no doctor who scrutinizes much of anything anymore and if one wants absolute optimization, one is going to have to do it for themselves. Thank goodness we live in an era where we have access to information, research and communities like this. Recently I have found that I know much more information about topics than any of my MDs and am way more up on the current research. I think after medical school most MDs are simply surviving the crush of practice and the last thing they want to do when they go home is read. Understandable, but unfortunate for those who just "go with" the knowledge from long ago.
