What to do while waiting for machine?

Post by ShallowBreather » Sat Aug 28, 2021 6:11 pm

I’m so tired. I’m the one that went to the doctor because I was noticing that I was essentially having centrals while dozing. They snap me awake until I’m too tired to care. No, it isn’t every day but many. Today is one of those bad days where I can’t even nap right.

My 2nd study isn’t until Sept 9. They want to test me on a bilevel, but the folks one this board say I’m the perfect candidate for ASV.

Today I’m looking for suggestions what to do in the meantime. Ten days for the study and ??? days for my own machine. Any tips or hints before then?

If you feel up to it acquire (or buy used) a cpap so you can get used to it. You will likely need a higher end cpap but insurance may require you to fail on cpap before they will pay for a higher end cpap for you.

But that would mean you will also need a mask, hose, etc. Would be great if you knew a friend or family member who has something they could loan you. Or even if a member of this board lived near you and could help direct you,

Just don't use a used hose or mask, never, ever, esp. these days.

please see above thread for past history as well as diagnosis

A titration sleep study was attempted....Buying a used cpap/apap to "get used to things" is not only a big waste of money it is potentially dangerous as well due to number of central apneas that popped up in a relatively short period of time.
It could potentially cause more apneas than doing nothing.

As to what can be done now....unfortunately not much beyond what we tell people whose machine breaks or power supply gets cut off.....sleep upright as much as possible...recliner,etc.

I had no idea you had a sleep study. Normally before the psg they request a list of meds taken as some can interrupt sleep.

A quick search found this
Dr. Derrick Lonsdaleanswered
Preventive Medicine 73 years experience
Diet + supplements: I have found that cental apnea is related to thiamine homeostasis, meaning that something is wrong with vcitamin b1 metabolism. I have treated a number of patients with largfe doses of thiamine and magnesium. See a nutritionist who is acquainted with vitamin supplements.

While waiting maybe your GP can order some bloodwork if your sleep doc hasn't already done so.

Its important to know as CSA and OSA are treated differently. And if you can treat the source (cause) of the problem life will be much easier. Waiting on insurance can be a long process.
