Surgery Monday
Surgery Monday
Hi Folks,
I saw the surgeon yesterday and he gave me clearance once again for surgery. I have been bumped up to this Monday.
He told me he didn't want me to use my bipap for 4 days total. He said he would keep me in the hospital in ICU for those 4 days so that they could monitor me closely.
He doesn't want me to rip out any of the staples in my soon to be new golfball size stomach. I am glad that I will be under close observation, this to me makes good sense for the surgeon and the hospital to completely understand the sleep apnea situation and keep you in a place that has intense monitoring.
When I get out of the hospital, I will let you all know more details.

Ted,
I'm so happy that they didn't keep you waiting too long for the rescheduled date. I won't be around from Monday through Wednesday, so I wish you the best again. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers for a safe procedure and speedy recuperation.
By the way, why does bipap affect your stomach? Hey, maybe while you're in ICU and they have you hooked up to all those monitors, they may see you don't have OSA anymore!!! Wouldn't that be a present?
Best of luck, Ted. You deserve it. Let us all know how it went as soon as you're able.

Bipap will affect the stomach just a cpap does. We all, at least I have, suffered from lots of gas at time from the cpap. Because your esophagus sits right near your trachea, or windpipe, some air is bound to go into the esophagus, bypassing the lungs all together. Because bypass surgery involves making the stomach into an esentially one ounce pouch, less air is tolerated - also, because it is fresh surgery, the risk of getting air into the stomach is too high - the staples/sutures have not had a chance to heal yet.

Ted,
My sis-in-law and 2 nieces had stomach stapling about 3-4 years ago. Recovery is not fun but they are all doing very well and are glad they did it. And they definitely saved money on the food bill post-surgery.
Will be praying that the Lord will guide the Dr's hands and that you will have a smooth recovery.

Heck, just tie a tight belt made of pantyhose legs around your middle and cpap through it all!!
RG, that will need to be one small cake... about the size of a golf ball... and then TED will have to share.

Ted, my thoughts are going to be with you this week. This surgery is not a piece of cake, and as I am sure you already know, the after-effects are not great either until your body has a chance to adjust. I imagine you'll be on liquids for several weeks, so he won't even be able to eat that cake until it is stale, RG.
My cousin-in-law had hers done, had lots of complications (but Im wondering if she didn't bring them on herself), and two years later is gaining weight again by doing the same thing she did in the first place--eat junk food and be generally a lazy *itch, letting her husband and everyone else wait on her and take care of her kids. Now she is eating carbs and sweets because she claims she has low blood sugar. Self-diagnosed, of course.
But I know you are an intelligent man and would never let any of that happen. You are doing something that will help you and you know it. I don't see you back-sliding to weight gain.

Ted's upcoming surgery
Hey Ted.
Good luck with your surgery, I wish you a speedy recovery. You will be fine. and it sounds like all your cpaptalk friends will be here waiting to hear from you. Take care of yourself now, I will say a little prayer for you.
