What Do ENTs Recommend for Blocked Nostril

Post by Cocka2 » Fri May 19, 2023 4:46 pm

I’m going to make an appointment to see a ENT doctor as I’m getting convinced that my constant nightly complaint of having a blocked nose ( Left side nostril only ) is in some way effecting my sleep apnea numbers ( OSCAR ) . Having never before been to an ENT doctor , I am wondering what options or suggestions the ENT doctor may talk to me about .

So I’m wondering if any one here has had / does suffer from a blocked nose , and if you visited a doctor to discuss your blocked nose symptoms and what options did the ENT doctor suggest .

I have, or had, the same issue!
Several months I saw an ENT.
I was anticipating that I would need the same surgery that I had 15 years ago(Think Roto-Rooter & deviated septum repair).
After my exam, she stated that I should try nasal rinsing my nose a couple of times a day and to use Flonase. And, IF that didn't help, she'd consider other options.
Long story short, flushing my nose out, and using Flonase, has made a World of difference!!
Btw, I seldom flush it out more than once a day.

I used to use Afrin every night in order to be able to use my machine. It's seldom needed any more.

Hi and many thanks for your comment.

I now have the appointment to see an ENT doctor , I'm hoping that no surgery will be suggested and the way forward will be similar to your experience. I will of course post back what the ENT doctor recommends.

If the blockage comes and goes, a nasal decongestant should work.
I like oxymetazoline hydrochloride nasal spray.
If the blockage is continual, caused by a deviated septum,
more aggressive action may be indicated.
Surgery is scary, but I am covered with scars from necessary repairs.
(If it's broken, it's crazy not to fix it.)

Cocka2, you might start using a nasal rinse and Flonase now. Then when you see the ENT, you can report on the results, if any. That might move things along a little more briskly.

I used NeilMed nasal rinse and Flonase on the advice of my allergist. The sensations involved in nasal rinsing are a little odd, but I adjusted quickly. You'll need some distilled water for the rinse and then for some stages of cleaning the equipment.

I used Flonase about an hour before going to bed. It can take a while to kick in -- maybe a week or two -- so be patient with it.

My guess is that because you're stopped up on just one side, these measures won't help you a lot. But it's always worth trying the simple things first, and as I say, the ENT might benefit from knowing even negative results.

I have one side of my nostril blocked as long as i can remember. I have used a full face mask to compensate for it. I keep my mouth open all night long.

You may need to see an ENT double boarded in ENT and plastic surgery to do reconstruction not just take out more of the inside of the nose

I am looking into the surgery. Could my Flow Limits be caused by my deviated Septum/nasal turbinate issue?
